About Me

Jenny Amlen

Born in New York City, Jenny Amlen has performed around the world, including stints in the US, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean. Jenny can belt out the blues, improvise melodies with Middle Eastern influence or croon a sweet-as-chocolate ballad using her versatile three-octave range and incredible tone. She began her music career at the American Music Dramatic Academy and received a BA from SUNY College in music. Being fascinated by eastern raga, she studied in India with Terry Riley and La Monte Young. Jenny’s original bands have performed in world-famous New York City clubs including CBGB’s, China Club, Tramps, Knitting Factory the Bitter End, Red Lion, Coda and Kenny’s Castaways. She’s received glowing reviews from New York City Music Magazines. She has collaborated with Kennen Keating of Hit and Run publishing and Windham Hill’s Michael Harrison. After signing an Artist/Management contract with Kevin Makowski, the producer of the Rickie Lake show, she collaborated with Coati Mundi from Kid Creole and the Coconuts. They recorded her first CD, simply titled “Jenny Amlen”. Her second CD, titled ‘Something Blue’, was recorded with jazz guitarist Dom Minasi of Blue Notes Records. It included interesting interpretations of standards as well as original compositions. She has also recorded with Grammy nominee John Tevin. Jenny signed a publishing/recording contract with an Indie label in Munich, Germany where she received radio play and toured throughout Western Europe. While in Germany Jenny recorded the CD “Serious Thinking” which was produced by members of the well-known group Medley. Jenny recorded “Jenny Amlen unplugged” with Jenny playing acoustic guitar and singing. She has also performed with Warner Brothers artist Bob Dawson at corporate events. Jenny continues writing and has written well over 200 songs to date.Jenny recently partnered with New York City guitarist Ed Howe for her next CD, which is the best reflection to date of her varied styles and interests, from blues to jazz to folk to country to Eastern raga. Ed is producing, arranging and playing most of the instruments on the CD, which contains all new original material written by Jenny. The CD, entitled ‘Many Hats’ to reflect Jenny’s versatile song writing talents, is being recorded in part at the world-famous Legacy Studios in midtown Manhattan. Both Jenny and Ed have joined the family at So-N-So records and they look forward to a long and rewarding relationship with the burgeoning record label. Anticipated release of Many Hats is end of Summer, ’07. Watch for it! Take a listen to clips of "Secret" and other tunes from Many Hats.

Many Hats - a background

I first met Jenny at an open jam at the A&M Roadhouse that I was running with my band, the Tall Man Band. Jenny was invited by mutual friend and then TMB drummer, Jeff Ganz. I was really impressed with her performance with us, and we hit it off. She became a regular at our open jam. At one point we talked about original material. I played her my few originals, and she began giving me CDs of her stuff. Some were done in a studio, and some were just Jenny on acoustic guitar. While it was the acoustic stuff that really caught my ear, it was one of the studio tunes that got me thinking. I heard a really good song but the arrangement did it no justice at all. I decided to record that song without telling Jenny, leaving the vocal track off so she could complete it later. I came up with my own arrangement, one that I felt did the song justice, and played all the instruments, including bass, keyboards, acoustic and electric guitars, and 12 string electric guitar. Drums completed the song via a drum machine. When I played it for Jenny she was impressed and we decided to move forward and start recording her other songs, mostly from her acoustic work. This became the basis for the CD were working on, Many Hats. Recently, we hooked up with Jenny's brother who owns Legacy Recording Studios to take the music to the next level. We will be redoing all the vocals, recording live drums with Keith Foley and we've invited Tom Appel to play some of the bass tracks as well. Tom Appel and Keith Foley also join us as the performing band called 'The Jenny Amlen Band'. Tom, Keith and I are collectively now known as 'Amlenmen'.The title Many Hats comes from the fact that Jennys songs dont easily fit into any one category, and all her songs have a unique feel to them. From the funky Its Alright to the mysterious Secret to the middle eastern influenced Dance Dance, all have their unique feel and sound. I see Jenny wearing a different hat as she wrote each song. Thus the title! Its a highlight of her versatility as a performer and songwriter.
