About the CD
Many Hats - a background
I first met Jenny at an open jam at the A&M Roadhouse that I was running with my band, the Tall Man Band. Jenny was invited by mutual friend and then TMB drummer, Jeff Ganz. I was really impressed with her performance with us, and we hit it off. She became a regular at our open jam. At one point we talked about original material. I played her my few originals, and she began giving me CDs of her stuff. Some were done in a studio, and some were just Jenny on acoustic guitar. While it was the acoustic stuff that really caught my ear, it was one of the studio tunes that got me thinking. I heard a really good song but the arrangement did it no justice at all. I decided to record that song without telling Jenny, leaving the vocal track off so she could complete it later. I came up with my own arrangement, one that I felt did the song justice, and played all the instruments, including bass, keyboards, acoustic and electric guitars, and 12 string electric guitar. Drums completed the song via a drum machine. When I played it for Jenny she was impressed and we decided to move forward and start recording her other songs, mostly from her acoustic work. This became the basis for the CD were working on, Many Hats. Recently, we hooked up with Jenny's brother who owns Legacy Recording Studios to take the music to the next level. We will be redoing all the vocals, recording live drums with Keith Foley and we've invited Tom Appel to play some of the bass tracks as well. Tom Appel and Keith Foley also join us as the performing band called 'The Jenny Amlen Band'. Tom, Keith and I are collectively now known as 'Amlenmen'.The title Many Hats comes from the fact that Jennys songs dont easily fit into any one category, and all her songs have a unique feel to them. From the funky Its Alright to the mysterious Secret to the middle eastern influenced Dance Dance, all have their unique feel and sound. I see Jenny wearing a different hat as she wrote each song. Thus the title! Its a highlight of her versatility as a performer and songwriter.
