As we settle into this new millennium, in 2006, I can’t help but notice how many untimely deaths have occurred that have affected my life. With that in mind, I present “Resurrection Man,” wherein I channel the spirit of my dear departed friends and influences, such as Syd Barrett, Arthur Lee, Warren Zevon, Hunter S. Thompson and Edie Sedgwick. I do this out of respect and admiration for the powerful impact they had on myself and countless others. In a volatile world where societies have regressed to a point where “reality” TV, one-sided talk shows, psychotic organized religions and internet chat/networking take precedence over the truly important issue of the future of our planet, I believe pause must be taken to recognize the few artistic souls who have provided us with brief moments of idealistic vision, if not simply a blissful diversion from this whole mess. I hope that by listening to this music, you will find a moment of your own.
Shotgun Golf: If Hunter S. Thompson had been a musician, he would have sounded like Warren Zevon. Like Warren, he needed a “sendoff” song. Here it is.
Tragic Heart (The Ballad of Edie Sedgwick): During her surreal life, she never became “product,” because she was a star in real life. Now she’s immortal and an icon. I would have loved her completely had we ever met. Sadly, few are hip to her groundbreaking style.
Many Happy Returns: When my last girlfriend left the first time, I wrote to wish her luck. When the luck ran out, she came back.
Time and Tide: Memphis/Sun Records/Stax-Volt/Muscle Shoals, etc. It’s all here with the grits, gravy and Dixie grease that’s a part of my deal when I’m in the mood. Van Morrison, please cover this someday.
Hearts and Minds: The new millennium has seen its share of disasters – natural and/or man-made. What becomes of governments and authorities who disregard or mistreat their own citizens?
Temporary Worlds: Nothing is permanent but death and taxes. When disposable pop culture/fashion/flavor of the month and “reality” become unreal, you know I’m ready for the next life.
Velvet Eyes Again: Is it “absence makes the heart grow fonder,” or “out of sight, out of mind”? I say it’s absence, and my soul mate agrees.
The Need For Each Other: Man does not live by bread alone. We all live for love and its exciting anticipation.
Friendship (Jeff’s Song): Jeff has made it to the other side, where no doubt he’s jamming with Morrison, Lennon, Harrison, Zevon and Nyro. Save a spot in that band for me, ol’ pal (unless Jimi’s already got it covered).
Resurrection Man: Note to listener: “This is a tribute, NOT a rip off!” Sometimes you just gotta cut loose and have some fun.
Lost in Cyberspace/Found in the Vortex: The internet can be a dark and foreboding place. This one’s about what ominous specters are lurking at the end of the superhighway. Kubrick would have been my first choice for director, but Lynch will do.
Back in the day, all bands got to do this on every record, often a lot more self-indulgently. Now I’m not calling this “progressive,” it’s actually “regressive.” We had vocals, but decided the noize was more interesting on its own. You might want to take a nice long hit o’ somethin’ before listening to this one.
Soccer Mom Breakdown: To tell this modern-day tale of the confessional TV crowd, I channeled the spirit of an ex-girlfriend’s dad (character actor Ray Walston), who in his younger days did time on Broadway, and later taught me to project my voice to the back of the theater – vaudevillian style. Hence the persona I call Emmett (my real middle name) Paradise, because the stress these women endure in today’s world is anything but – paradise.
I Am Here (Get Used To That): Dedicated to Syd Barrett and Arthur Lee – spiritual brothers from London and L.A., respectively. You guys were in the studio with me – thanks for the guidance (I threw in a little Procol Harum for flavor). I look forward to joining you on the great adventure that is forever.
