The voice of soul

DJ was born in the United States of America. At an early age he was exposed to soul, funk and jazz music. His first influences were his cousins and brothers who had a soul group called the Jacks of soul. Which was the name of their manager at the time! The band did quite well but eventually broke up. Never to reunite again but that didn’t stop DJ. He became very interested in playing an instrument and the electric bass was his first choice but because he could not afford to buy a bass he started playing piano because there was one at his grandmother’s house. Eventually he would teach himself to play the electric guitar, bass guitar, and piano! DJ attended a Baptist church where he sang in the choir. He was very active in the church world. The choir he sang with would perform at different churches and functions in the metropolitan area. He began to meet different gospel artists that inspired his music in song writing such as: Marvin Winans, Local artist/guitarist Tim Boman, Bobby McGuire (Trumpet), song writer, keyboardist and producer Vernon D Fails and many more! D January began to play in a gospel band called second generation! They did gospel covers as well as original music! He was the guitarist in that band! Second generation played around Detroit in different churches and functions! D January attended Highland Park community college and took a course in improvisation which was headed by Marcus Bellgrave who was also teacher to Chuck Mangione (Artist/Trumpet player) and many more! Eventually he began to do some jazz gigs together with Marcus as a guitarist. After working with Marcus other doors began to open. He became musical director at odyssey communications where he hired musicians and recorded music for the program. Eventually DJ left the United States looking for more musical adventure and took residence in Sweden! There he began to play with different artists throughout Europe! Artists such as: Gary Brooker (Procol Harim), Paul Jones (Manfred man), Marie Bergman, Clas Yngström (Sky high blues band), Blossom Taintum (Afro-Ditie), Magnum Coltrain Price (R&B artist), Desmond Foster (Reggae), September (Pop) Emilio Estrada (Violin), Paula Lobos (R&B), Baba T (Soul, funk and reggae), Julius Green (Mad ladds and platters), Khaled Habib, Joyce Hurley and many more! DJ is currently living in Sweden performing and touring with various artists!
