I was born on December 11, 1943 at Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Colorado. I traveled a lot when I was young. On these trips, I found out firsthand what makes America a great leader in the world, our optimism and our democratic values. And I learned that other countries around the world share many of the same goals and that the best way to reach these goals is through building strong alliances all over the world. I'm a Vietnam War vet and proud of it. I felt I had an obligation to give something back to this country that has given so much to me. I served two tours of duty. On my second tour, I volunteered to serve on a Swift Boat in the river deltas, one of the most dangerous assignments of the Vietnam War. I earned a Silver Star, a Bronze Star with Combat V, and three Purple Hearts. I decided to become active as a Vietnam Veteran Against the War (VVAW). I became a spokesman for VVAW and later co-founded Vietnam Veterans of America. I became a United States Senator in 1985 from the great state of Massachusetts. I'm married to a wonderful woman named Teresa, and I have two daughters Alexandra and Vanessa and three stepsons John, Andre, and Chris.
