I was born Oct. 1, 1924, in Plains, GA, and grew up in nearby Archery. My father, James Earl Carter, Sr., was a farmer and businessman; and my mother, Lillian Gordy Carter, was a registered nurse.I received a B.S. from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946, and worked in the nuclear submarine program until 1953. I did graduate work in nuclear physics at Union College in Schenectady, N.Y. and was the senior officer of the pre-commissioning crew of the Seawolf nuclear submarine. On July 7, 1946, I married Rosalynn Smith of Plains, and after a time working with her in a farm supply store in Plains, I was elected to the Georgia Senate. I was elected Governer of Georgia on Jan. 12, 1971. I served as President of the United States from Jan. 20, 1977, to Jan. 20, 1981. I have 4 children and 11 grandchildren which are my pride and joy.Since my tenure as President, I have spent much of my time working with the Carter Center on many projects around the world to promote peace and human rights along with economic and social development. In my spare time I enjoy woodworking and fishing.
