Huggy J.B.

About Me

"Huggy" Jörg Borghardt, the Blues’n Boogie pianist from Dortmund (Germany), has been touring since 1984, and that far over Germany’s boundaries. He appears solo as a rule, but also as a duo with a guitar, blues-harp or saxophone, with a trio and for the last few years with his own band "The Huggy J.B. Allstars" as well. Further more he appeared on stage and worked in studio with many different blues-, rock and psychedelic bands.

He learned his first basic piano notes as a child from his grandfather, received a normal classical education and discovered the blues as "his music" pretty early in life. Since then his rocky blues’n boogie piano style can be heard in innumerable pubs and clubs and at various matinees. Added to that are the gigs at festivals-from the Freak festival (for instance five times at the Bullshit festival in Oer-Erkenschwick) and international jazz festivals like the Jazzfest in Gronau right through to radio and TV. Not to mention repeated appearances in Paris and jams in the best blues clubs in New York and Chicago.

Besides classics like Elmore James’ " Dust my Broom", Willie Dixon’s "Hoochie Coochie Man" or Greg Allman’s "Whipping Post", Huggy’s program includes a respectable number of self-compositions. These go from the extremely fast "New Trumpet Heat Boogie" through midtempo boogies like "Here I Go" with typical rolling boogie-woogie bass figures, to the relaxed and full of feeling "Nuthin’ but the Blues". Also from gospel "I Believe" to rock and soul songs and fast swing numbers.

Critics not only praise Huggy’s brilliant technique, but especially his feeling for the blues and his ability to "make the sparks fly" so that, according to Visions 02/2000 (one of Germany’s biggest music magazines) gigs with the "Dortmunder Master of the Blues" have often been described in the press as highlights of many festivals. Blues’n Boogie fans definitely get what they pay for at Huggy J.B.’s concerts.
