Review from K.K. at cosmiclava.com
Some bands can't record ordinary or boring albums and the Texans BLOOD OF THE SUN definitely belong to such musicians. 'Death Ride' is their third record, again released through Brainticket Records in 2008 and once again there have been some changes in the line-up. New Guitarist Eric Schmidt, who's also in Mitra, but the biggest surprise is new entrant Derek St. Holmes, the former singer and rhythm guitarist for Ted Nugent and St. Paradise. Classic songs like 'Stranglehold', 'Hey Baby' or 'Stormtroopin' wouldn't be so unmistakable without his vocals and he also suits perfectly to the heavy organ-driven sound of BLOOD OF THE SUN. The musical changes keep within a limit, tough in comparison to the previous records 'Death Ride' is in places more funky. That's alright for me, particularly because the entire sound didn't lose anything from its striking heaviness.'Rise from the Underground' for example is so fat and heavy that it always gives me a goosebumps. Drummer Henry Vasquez is singing this song as well as 'Shine', who knows to convince as he did on the second record 'In Blood We Rock'. The interaction between all musicians is simply perfect and everyone manage to set a course, whereas organist/pianist Dave Grynder's diversified playing is adding the ulimate cut to this thunderous sound. 'Death Ride' is engrained in the 70's, but it never sounds outmoded or antiquated. It's supersaturated with energy and power from the first to the last song. Marvelous! This time BLOOD OF THE SUN have recorded a cover version of Lucifer's Friend's 'Keep Going', which is from their first album. It's redundant to mention that the execution is superb. For me personal this is one of the best albums of 2008 and meanwhile BLOOD OF THE SUN have demonstrated that they are an exceptional band, who rule every stage, too. What for a killer album!

First let me jump in with both feet to say I am beyond stoked to see some true Heavy Rock emerge from DFW. For so long we have been soaked down with too many bands who all sound the same. What does that mean? Well let's just be honest many of the bands here dare to sound different; Blood of the Sun is not in that boat. They let it hang loose with an organ and some fuzz on the guitar much like alot of the bands on one of my favorite labels Small Stone Records. (www.smallstone.com) the band has a retro style with a modern sound to it. It reflects back to the roots of heavy rock, not metal but just pure acid rock. They could hold their own with Gov't Mule, The Black Crowes & Deep Purple. There are elements from those bands in their music. I got to see them live at the Dallas Doom Metal Festival a couple of months ago and the stage was small they were on but the sound destroyed! I threw this CD into my CD player in the car and it took me on a journey. I had a flashback of my uncles old grand prix with the loud pipes, chrome foot pedals on the gas & headlight switch. Hurst shifter and the ever so hidden hemo's stuck in the drivers side AC vent. Yes I was raised by hippies (with good taste in cars HA) The production on this CD shines bright like the talent very clear and warm sounding. Let's dive into first track as it sets the pace for what is to come, it is called "One More For The Ride" the picture on the back is a black & white of a dude on a old late 60's Springer style chopper. I bet he has had one more for the ride HA Cool picture! "Rise from the Underground" is the next track that stands out. It kicks off with some fuzz, the organ and drums. It then pushes ya to turn the knob up a little more, very catchy tune for this band. Up next is my favorite track on the CD a song called "Rock and Roll" very doomy sound with vocals that give ya a chill all the way down to your feet. It has a very solid jam feel to it. The band pulls out the goody bag to say here you made it this far on the CD here is crown jewel. I pointed a few tracks out on this CD but want to make sure you all know there is not one bad song on it. Fire up your lava lamp and bong! You will need it for this one. check em out on the web www.myspace.com/bloodofthesun ~ Chris Nite | Radio 81X The Beast www.chrisnitelive.com
Review from RAYSREALM
BLOOD OF THE SUN – “Death Ride†CD ’08 (Vibra, US) – Ok, that some mo-fo is really swinging that gauntlet around, cause now the s.o.b. has landed in Texas and BLOOD OF THE SUN has reached for it with this, their 2nd effort. I was pretty taken with these boys’ debut effort awhile back, laced as it was with a total ‘70’s biker hard rock vibe and adorned with plenty nifty leads & analog keys. This time, the twist is that the lead vocals on nearly all of “Death Ride†are supplied by the one and only Derek St. Holmes. In case some of you are staring blankly at the screen saying “Ray, who the hell is Derek St. Holmes?†then, 2 things. First, I pity you. Secondly, take out your dog-eared copy of “Ted Nugent†(1975) and look. Yes, that Derek St. Holmes. And, as you might expect, he fits this music like the proverbial glove. I mean hell, a couple minutes into opening cut “One More For The Road,†when St. Holmes belts out the line “Caught you with another man!†I’m standing on the bed, clutching my air mic and wishing I had a ‘70’s Afro! But damn, I’m telling you, great vocals aside, these guys put the pedal to the metal hard as hell and just rawk like stinking dawgs for this entire album! There isn’t one dull cut, as numbers like “Edge Of The Sky,†“Shine†and “The Witchin Hour†prove. Check out guitarists Ty & Eric , as they simply “go off†on lead duels with keyboard man Dave Gryder. Hell, the insert pic looks like an outtake from The Allmans “Filmore East†and these guys jam like a hard rock version of Georgia’s best. Remember the days when a band wasn’t afraid to just open the jets during the middle of a song and let the guys solo like crazy?! Welcome home, chief, your ride is here. Ass-Kickin’ 101 is in session! 9.0Article written by JUSTIN PRESS "Dallas Observer"
So it wasn’t until I pulled my 72’ Chevy Malibu onto the highway the other afternoon, sun was burning down hot and the open road lay before me. A blazing western wind was hitting the windshield and skidding up and over my car like dragon’s breathe. “Fuck, the only thing missing to this concrete journey was the right tunageâ€. Check the glove box, nothing just Zig Zags and old bottle caps, under the seat, hell no, just another burnt down roach, did find my Zeppelin dogtags though, cool. Back seat under my chick’s cut-offs, nah, not there either. Last place, drive-side visor. Damn straight, what did I have here….Purple, nah, too much Stormbringer last week, little Foghat, need some boogie, not just the English stuff, not yet. ZZ’s Tres Hombres, gonna save that for the kegger. Too bright for Sabbath and shit, Captain Beyond is cracked. Need something scenic, hazy like a desert yet blistering enough to keep my foot down on the gas. Got this one from, let me read it, can’t read shit with this tripped font, Blood of what?.. The Sun? Blood of the Sun? Slide it in, cranked the volume, Jensen tri-axels need to heat up in this burning wind. I need t-tops, fuck the windows down. (listening…listening…listening). “Holy hell is that an organ, a cowbell, freakin’Savoy Brown groove??†Did I just put in an 8-track because god damn if 1973 didn’t just flash before my mind……………………..
Here it is man, the trip known as Blood Of The Sun. Too bold to be stoner, but they’re just as stoned, too physical to be metal and too mean and studied to be AOR. Blood Of The Sun is lifestyle music, that is if your lifestyle is exploring, expanding and dripping your mind in the sonic senses. Picture a Logan Earth Sky skateboarder leaning into deep, carving lines down a desolate California mountain road. Long hair, slip-on Vans, headband and a head full of acid just sending him careening into infinity. That is the Blood Of The Sun experience. To simplify if Jon Lord got into knife fight with Grand Funk with heavy slabs 70’s jam raining down upon it, then you’d be in the ballpark. Fuck, enough of me yelling from the rooftops about Blood Of The Sun, go out and find out the exeprience on your own. And just in case you need the specs on these Texan thunderheads then dig it because baby it might be 2008 but the Blood are working like its 1970 burning up the studio, gigging with legends and turning Europe on its ass.
-New blood appears in Blood Of The Sun as longtime Dallas shredder Eric Schmidt (ex- Speedealer, Pervis and Mitra) joins the ranks and add his “Gorham†to Ty's “Robertsonâ€.
-Blood of the Sun tackles two American rock institutions as they team up with the original metal band Blue Cheer (Summertime Blues) for a night of fuzz, distortion and a room full of smoke with a show at Dallas premier theater, The Granada, and then three hours North in Oklahoma City. **As this hits the press, the band is also in the studio with the legendary Derek St. Holmes (of Ted Nugent band fame) “Hey Babyâ€, “Just What The Doctor Orderedâ€, yeah that dude, laying down tracks for their next opus at Palmyra Studios using the Abbey Road console (wrap your head around that purists).
-The Europe 2008 Campaign starts in April with Mos Generator terrorizing the local villages leaving a wake of “bloodied†followers in their wake. From there it’s to Holland for the world famous Roadburn Festival sharing the stage with monsters like Trouble, ISIS and retro-killers Witchcraft, basically this is huge show. After that they will burn thru Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Belguim and Scandanavia like Hell’s hounds laying down bruising sounds that only Orange Amplification can provide.
-Later in the summer for their second Atlantic Crossing blitzkreig, the Stoner Hands Of Doom Festival awaits them in Germany (moved from the USA).
And that is just half of the story as August and September will continue to see Blood Of The Sun devouring what is left of various countrysides.
