Captain Beyond

About Me

"Listen, jump on a moonbeam and ride. Ride it, glide it all the way." Captain Beyond! One of the most underrated and unappreciated bands in rock 'n' roll history. Featuring members of Deep Purple, Iron Butterfly and Johnny Winter Captain Beyond was a southern rock anomaly. A band of the Capricorn generation which defined Southern Rock in ways generally uncomprehensible for the average fan of bands such as The Allman Brothers. The music was at times too psychedelic and even intellectual for those who would later hold cigarette lighters overhead and yell such phrases as "Play Freebird!" In many ways the immense creativity and originality of Captain Beyond was found "unclassifiable" by the major record labels and commercial radio stations hence a lack of promotion, airplay and consistent tour schedules. Such neglect resulted in a premature death of a band that should be seen as gods among gods. Although the band was eventualy regrouped in the '90s and continues today. The music of Captain Beyond has the spine of any heavy-guitar-driven-band of any era before them or to follow. At moments it rivals such bands as Yes, King Crimson and Rush while weaving the soul and pump of hard-rock-blues-bands like ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple. Captain Beyond is a rare gem lost in an old mine of acid rock. For those of you just joining the spaceship buckle-up and hang on for a journey far above the ozone, onward and BEYOND ...
