I am here for Friends

About Me

writer, D.J., and social throwback. I have a "real" job , but my passions are writing and digging good music, on disc or in the flesh. I know 3 chords at most and we haven't spoken for a while, so I am content to listen and let the real guys do it. I play their records on my show, "Radio Americain" on KABF 88.3 FM every Friday afternoon 1-3. We're online at kabf883.com too.I love music. Jazz, blues, rockabilly, country before it became crap, mambo/rumba/Afro Cuban, and good ol' Cajun two step. Also a big Tom Waits fan. My favorite jazz is the early bebop stuff, cats who came up through swing but had this new sound in their heads and hearts. Kansas City in the heyday was one scene I'd like to have made, man.

My Interests

music, books, writing, and hangin' around with like-minded folks.

I'd like to meet:

Most of the folks I really want to meet are dead, but hell, that ain't gonna stop me from diggin' 'em.

Music:

Hank Sr, Bird, Big Joe Turner, Robert Johnson, the whole Kansas City scene, the birth of bebop in New York's joints, Mississippi juke joints and dance halls.

Movies:

yes I have read the book, too

Television:

Dragnet, Batman:The Animated Series, and The Honeymooners. Family Guy and the old seasons of The Simpsons, with Phil Hartman.

Books:

Bukowski (prose and poetry), Hemingway, Fitzgerald; noir masters Hammett, Chandler, Jim Thompson, James M Cain, James Ellroy and even a bit of Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer. Raymond Carver's short fiction, Steinbeck, John Fante, "Motel Life" by Willy Vlautin, Dr Hunter S. Thompson and the Beats. whew, a mouthful. Recently hepped to Nelson Algren and William Saroyan, too.

Heroes:

Frankie Miller. A vet of the old honky tonk circuit who is a fine friend to a young guy like me. Guys who fought in WW2...and Bettie Page. She stirred the blood of Eisenhower-era America like no-one else. At least the guys ;)
