About Me

Hi my name is Marshall Holly, and I've always carried my trusty ol' Gibson acoustic J-45 on the hiways and byways of the good ol' USA. Along the rocky way I jumped in and out of all kinds of bands, acoustic bands, country bands, hard rock bands, grotty garage bands, hell I confess to playing Miserlou by Dick Dale and Pipeline by the Chantays. If you love surf guitar then you love Americana. Thats what I'm all about. I'm not a mythical figure, I'm a flesh and blood song writer whose heart has been broken a thousand times, who never got a break from anybody, who's had to struggle and fight to retain my sanity, just like every musician worth his/her salt, and when I write a song thats RIGHT I know it because it makes me cry down to my bones. My main influence on my journeys is the great book 'On The Road' by Jack Kerouac, also 'The Dharma Bums'. I think Kerouac's vision of young seekers criss-crossing across America with nothing but their rucksacks and guitars strapped to their backs visiting and re-visiting the great shrines of rock and roll and the blues that still shine along Route 66, the Mississippi Delta and the hot southwest of Austin, TX pretty much has been the tale of my life. I can tell you one thing, I've shaken the hands of Gary Snyder, the Beat Poet and by touching him I felt the whole Beat Movement rushing through me, and when I shook Jackson Browne's hand in Santa Barbara I could feel Laurel Canyon and Bleecker Street rushing through me. I've written thousands of songs. I wouldn't have bothered writing them if each and every one of them wasn't the most important puzzle for me to unravel in my life at that time, that precise moment. Each song I think of as one of my children. I go through a painstaking process of allowing the songs to rattle around in my brain and heart until they are ready to sing to the rest of the world, and hopefully you. I've recorded the CDs "Another Night in San Antone," "Overland" and the newest offering "A Song Worth Singing," the cover of which I painted myself. Hidden within the lyrics are details of my life, hidden like clues in a childlike illustration revealing the secrets I can only hide in the depths of my music. I love it when I receive a communication from a sympatico fan/friend who has similar realizations as my own when listening to my music. This is one of the major reasons that I'm offering my latest CD "A Song Worth Singing" completely FREE to download on my website, www.MarshallHolly.com, so you can download it and carry with you as you backpack the highways and byways like I have, with the same songs running through your head, as I have running through mine. In the evenings, you can catch me lying on my back on a hill staring at the stars and the constellations. In the mornings, I'm watering my garden smoking a giant spliff and thinking of fun things to do that day. I'm serious about having fun, and I feel that life is too short to waste time fussing and fighting...just like the Beatles say. Join Marshall's fan club on his website and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!!!!!
