About Me

Why would any one want to adopt a rescue dog? Aren’t rescue dogs like used cars? Why would I want someone else’s problems? Aren’t all rescue dogs just mutts anyways? I would rather buy a puppy so that I know what I am getting, and besides they are much cuter!
People have many different reasons for not adopting from rescue shelters. But what they don’t realize is that by not adopting they are contributing to these over crowded shelters.
Animal shelters can be the best source for looking for a new pet. Not only do they have a great selection of adult dogs, most that are already trained, but they also have kittens and puppies, even purebred dogs! Experts have analyzed that on average purebreds account for about 25 to 30 percent of shelter dogs.
The Humane Society of The United States estimates that 6-8 million dogs and cats enter shelters each year, of these pets 3-4 million are euthanized.
Despite the common myth that most of these dogs are, “bad dogs” research shows otherwise. According to extensive studies conducted by the National Council on Pet Population Study the following are the top ten reasons for surrender…
1. Moving
2. Landlord Issues
3. Cost of pet maintenance
4. No time for pet
5. Inadequate facilities
6. Too many other pets in the home
7. Pet Illnesses (i.e. – allergies)
8. Personal problems
9. Biting
10. No homes for littermates
Of these only number 9 relates to the dog itself and with proper training could be prevented.
Once you’ve decided to begin searching for a new pet, be sure to first check out your local animal shelters. You may find your “perfect pet” at your local shelter, you never know. Even if you do not find your ideal pet on your first visit, be sure to check back in because every day shelters receive new dogs and even puppies.
If you find yourself unsuccessful searching through your local shelter you may want to try searching humane societies, shelters, and rescue groups across your state. You may even do a national search. The website www.petfinder.com is also another valuable tool that runs a search for rescue pets based upon your selected criteria, such as location, age, gender, etc.
Be a hero and rescue an animal! Adopt don’t shop! (unless you choose to shop through rescue shelters) Only you can make a difference.
