Live music, dancing, art galleries and museums, musical theater & massage therapy. I'm intrigued by high fashion but, as most average Americans, I surely can't afford it & who in hell wants to be that thin, REALLY.
I love rock and roll, but I prefer it intricate and experimental. It can be hard or easy, as long as it's complex. My appreciation for that sort of music has led me into a dear love for jazz of all kinds and I especially adore early 30s jazz and 40s swing. Pop & country bore me to tears, however, I've heard some fantastic bluegrass that rocked my world. America's roots, that. I also have a real fondness for James Bond theme songs and anything kitschy.
I love cheesy, B-grade sci-fi and horror, comics and computer games. I read Robert Heinlein & Ray Bradbury when I was 8 and Isaac Asimov by 11. I collect all things Wonder Woman. Yeah, I'm pretty much a geek. Wanna start somethin'? Bring it. You KNOW I have a magic lasso.
I'd like to meet:
Music geeks. My clone. Any and all of my Subgenii Brethren. Yetinsyn unite! Writers, freaks, artists, weirdos, and those who are thinkers but aren't afraid to have their dingbat moments. Those who aren't afraid at all.
Individuals who are two-faced, false & only want what others have.......stay the hell away from me! Only real people here, please.
Music:
I covered this in interests, really, (as far as musical styles go) but all time favorite would be Frank Zappa. Also...David Bowie, Queen, Benny Goodman, Laurie Anderson, k.d. lang, Joni Mitchell, Primus, (ANY Les Claypool, really) Rage Against the Machine, Tool, Loreena McKennitt, Billie Holiday, Talking Heads, Heart, Opeth, The Mars Volta, Muse, King Crimson, and all aspects thereof, VNV Nation, etc., etc. A friend turned me on to Ron Jarzombek, metal guitarist SUPREME & Greg Howe, as well as Allan Holdsworth & Jimmy Bruno. Thank you, J.
I also love listening to local and small/smallish touring acts, such as The Flametrick Subs (psychobilly at it's best), Rev. Horton Heat, Ghoultown, The Voodoo Organist, Los Straitjackets, Swan Song (Led Zeppelin tribute), Anthem (Rush tribute - these guys are amazing!), Lone Star Floyd (duh, Pink Floyd tribute), Queen For A Day (astounding Queen tribute) & the White Ghost Shivers. Speaking of the early 30s jazz....absolutely divine...when in Austin, go, look, see. The WGS are fantastic!
Learned alot about The Allman Brothers recently that has me into them of late.
I'm going to see Allan Holdsworth on Nov. 6th. Oh man...check it out!
Speaking of King Crimson and all affiliated, here's Trey Gunn with KTU.
I did mention Queen, yes?
Ahhh, Joni...in Paris, maybe?
The divine k.d. lang. I've seen her three times, what a VOICE! It's from some time ago & the vid isn't great but holy COW, listen to her!
Okay, back on to some BADASS players...Primus! Live, even.
And who can stop at just one?
And because I love a GOOD copy tune, one more...even though it's just a partial.
Movies:
I love sci-fi but mostly anything with good special effects will get me into a theater. Otherwise I watch at home. People in theaters have no manners any more and I seriously dislike children running around and making noise. No, REALLY, I get ugly with their parents. It's a bad scene, not the Path of Least Resistance, therefore, anathema to "Bob" & I no longer put myself in that position if I can help it.
I get every damned cable channel they'll give me so I have plenty to watch when things come out on HBO. Most comedies I simply don't find funny and can't figure out their appeal. I do like dramas and "chick flicks" but in moderation. If it's well-written and has good dialog, I'll probably love it. If it's got great effects & even a crappy storyline, I'll probably love it. Oh, and as for specific movies....'Hedwig & The Angry Inch' I LOVE. 'Dr. Strangelove' was astounding and still is. 'Natural Born Killers' hits a lot of issues for me that may not be personal but are rampant in our society. I could watch those repeatedly. LOVED 'Cloverfield'. The Godzilla of our times. I found 'American Psycho' to be a black comedy, but hey, naked Christian Bale is a Very Good Thing. In fact, I really liked 'The Prestige'. Intriguing & intricate story and it had Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman AND David Bowie in it. Yummy...breakfast, lunch & dinner. Am I right, ladies?
I've adored many a film, I cannot pigeonhole nor limit them.
Television:
Okay, right now I'm watching 'Lost', 'Survivor' (my one and only reality show & yes I love it, dammit), 'The Daily Show' & 'The Colbert Report' (the News Hour), 'Heroes', & 'Bullshit'. Oh, I loves me some Penn Jillette! I like the new show 'Pushing Daisies' as well. Hello Tim Burton knock off, but hey, it's just like if Burton did TV. And 'Ugly Betty' is cute, poignant & has lots of "in" fashion jokes that I get.
In the past I've been a fan of 'The Sopranos', '6 Feet Under', 'Battlestar Galactica' (amazing drama for a sci-fi show), 'Deadwood', 'Rome' and 'Carnivale', which was the greatest damned show ever. HBO is clueless in the extreme for their cancellation of it WTF?!
Books:
Oh gods, I read constantly. I get seriously nervous when I don't have a book going. Lots of sci-fi. Lots of what I call "modern fantasy". Not the magic and swords kind of stuff, which bores me these days, but series like Stephen King's "Gunslinger" works, or Clive Barker's "Imajica" or "The Great and Secret Show". (BTW, I absolutely loathed Mr. S. King at the end of the 'Gunslinger' series. That bastard!)
I read anything Neil Gaiman and China Mieville put out and I think Neil Stephenson is amazing. (And yeah, hot. But he looks like Frank Zappa sorta, and I'm a freak like that.) The Philip Pullman books were good ("His Dark Materials" series) and Jasper Fforde has done some fun and interesting stuff as well. Love his clever names.
Classics? Oh, I was a more gothy kid than I knew. I got this 'Big Book of Poe' sort of thing when I was real young and it was a collected works deal. I adored that sort of gloominess very early. Funny, for such a happy, light-hearted kid. 'Lenore' I thought, was the...Greatest. Poem. Ever.
I read at an advanced rate at a young age....had a 50-word reading vocabulary before they started teaching me and once I started my own life of reading, I never quit. I couldn't. You avid readers out there know what I'm sayin'. Word. Get it? "Word"? Reading? Dork moment on my profile....do I get Dorky Geek or Utterly Charming points for that?
Heroes:
Hmmmmmm......I think "hero" is an awfully grand word that is thrown about a bit too much. The firefighters in New York on 9/11 were heroes, even if they were just doing their job. And look how they got screwed when it came time for the inevitable medical aide they needed from our gov't.
Anyone who speaks out against religion mingled with government is my personal hero.
People who work to keep animals safe are heroes. Animals are the only true innocents in this world.
Heroes....those who bring you Slack in unexpected ways. And often, not even purposefully done, it's inadvertently given Slack, surprising the both of you.
