“In 1987 I was introduced to the art of DJing. Before this all I knew of DJing was a few video shots and songs that incorporated scratching. A friend and I would play a UTFO record, a Rappin’ Duke record, and watch all the hip-hop movies we could as many times as we could. From Wild Style to Beat Street, we became fascinated with the art of MCing and DJing. This experience and my love of music blended naturally. Spinning my first local party marked the beginning …
DJ SELF BORN has a multitude of talents when he steps behind the turntables. Accurate in his selections and powerful in his transitions, he is known as one of the nation’s hottest disc jockeys. This south side of Chicago native has DJ experience in all arenas; the common club night, corporate benefits, as well as radio experience. In the 90’s while DJing Midwest college parties and traveling weekly to different cities a well known Chicago rap group named Primeridian took notice and recruited the hungry DJ. This introduced Gregg D., at the time, to the life of an artist and the world of performing on stage. Spending time on stage as an artist intrigued him so much; producing became the natural next step. DJ SELF BORN’s production work was first represented in the album “Where You From?” with Chicago’s Outfitters USA. Together with rapper / producer Malik Allah, SELF BORN produced a distinctive sound and a producer / co-producer relationship that will rival any production team. With the Outfitters, he has shared the stage with the likes of 50 Cent & G-Unit, Jay-Z & Rocafella. He has also rocked from coast to coast with Wu Tang Clan where he toured with C-Rayz Walz (MTV MADE) & Raekwon the Chef acting as Tour DJ/Host. Dynamic stage presence and natural chemistry solidified DJ SELF BORN as C-Rayz Walzs DJ. Following that successful tour, the second Definitive Jux release by C-Rayz Walz took the dou around the country again with Gza from Wu Tang Clan, Cannibal Ox, J-Live, & special guests 4th pyramid, Karniege, & Double AB. DJ SELF BORN has become known throughout the country as a deejay/host that controls the crowd wherever he is booked. Spinning a wide array of music from Frank Sinatra to Jay-Z shows a versatility never seen before. His live DJ work can be seen and heard on The Year of the Beast CD & DVD by C-Rayz Walz. Now relocated to South Beach, DJ SELF BORN has become a well known DJ throughout the Miami area as well as being an instructor for Jam Master J’s “DJ Scratch Academy”, www.scratch.com . In November of 2006 after a chance meeting of Derrick “Fonzworth Bentley” Watkins (the man formerly known as P Diddy’s Assistant) and a very successful show at a GQ Magazine / Cadillac Showcase lead to the official recruitment of DJ Self Born as his DJ as well as a producer along side Kanye West on his upcoming project, C.O.L.O.U.R.S (Cool Outrageous Lovers of Uniquely Raw Style). Then, in 2007 after only 10 minutes of listening, hip hop legend Special Ed quickly recruited the DJ also. As well as constantly doing artist tour dates you can catch him spinning any of the best clubs or hotels in South Beach. You can see from this list of accomplishments, DJ SELF BORN will be a name remembered in music forever.
