I've been enjoying punk rock since new years eve of 1985. On the off chance I went to see a heavy metal show, but found a band called Death Sentence. Oh sure.... DOA were headlining, but that wasn't exciting enough so I left (but hey, DOA became on of my all time favorite bands later)!
Radio - Powerchord
Since December of 2007 either myself or Aaron (Generation Annihilation) have been filling in for Powerchord. Then in January I received a phone call from one Gerald Rattlehead, a co-founder of this metal show saying that he was done. I used to listen to this show as far back as 1985!
Geoff "The Metal Pimp" has been having troubles hosting as well due to job commitments, so I threw my hat in and said I would like to fill-in on a regular basis. The powers that be at CiTR gave me the go ahead.
It's been an eye opener for me. Having listened mostly to hardcore punk for the past couple decades, I've started enjoying a lot more metal than I anticipated.
Thrash and death metal are what I enjoy the most, but I'll play any metal, crossover or good hardcore on Powerchord.
Radio - Generation Annihilation
Sometime in early 2002 my buddy Aaron started doing fill-in shows at CiTR radio. I had always wanted to get a show at that station, cuz as far as I'm concerned they are one of the best university radio stations in Canada.
Once Aaron started getting some regular fill-in spots I asked him if he'd like a co-host. He said "sure" and I went and got my training, did my demo tape for the radio station and finally go the go-ahead to DJ at CiTR.
Eventually we landed in the Saturday Noon - 1PM time slot. This was perfect. Aaron was always able to make it up, and I was usually able to make it (unless I had a hockey game, I was going to the radio station).
After a couple of years of not being able to co-host on a regular basis I'm finally back as of fall of 2007! It's great to make it up to join Aaron on Generation Annihilation again. Expect a healthy dose of d-beat when I'm there!
Radio - Club Grotesque
Sometime in 1988 I met somebody on a Bulletin Board (remember those places that were like a mini-internet?). This dude was the program director at CJSF radio. We sent messages back and forth and eventually he came to a party I was having in my Apartment in New Westminster. He brought a copy of the show he does at CJSF and we talked for a bit, but I passed out due to massive beer drinking and hash smoking (don't do that drug thing anymore, well except for booze).
Eventually he asks me to come up to the radio station on a Saturday night. Since it was a Saturday I had already drank too much and but jumped at the offer. We went to his buddies show that features "oldies" stuff. But the show that was right after was called "The Fluck Authority Show".
Rick, the host of the show wanted a break. After a quick tutorial he sat me behind the control board and let me rip! Man.. out of nowhere I was DJing!
I had the taste.. Soon after I got my own show from 2:00am - 4:00am Saturday morning. Eventually the guy that did midnight - 2:00am quit so I now had midnight to 6:00am!
The show was called Club Grotesque (well I had a few different names but that one lasted the longest) and went from early 1989 to 1995. Time-slots changed but the jist of the show was always PUNK ROCK.
I also made some great friends through this radio show! I initially met Aaron (Generation Annihilation) through a letter I wrote Maximumrocknroll regarding my radio show (he wrote me a letter and we eventually talked on the phone). Aaron was soon co-hosting with me on Club Grotesque!
Later on, two fella's came up to be trained sometime in 1990 and these guys were Jason and Bill. They both became good friends but Bill kinda disappeared at some point and me and Jason started co-hosting the show towards its end. Jason eventually moved back to his home town of Powell River, BC and then later on he relocated to Victoria, BC. It's unfortunate that we have had little contact in the last few years.
'Zines - Urinal Slime, Agree to Disagree
Sometime in 1987 I started a 'zine called Urinal Slime. I interviewed the Accused in it's first issue and other bands followed like AMQA, Kwik Way, Crib Death, Bunchofuckingoofs, Protest, Impulse Manslaugter, Protest, Maggot Sandwhich...
After a few years of hiatus I put out the last issue of Urinal Slime. That was early 1990. I then started up a new 'zine called Mu'sick which only lasted one issue. I had attempted to interview the Dunderheads for that issue, but I got so stinking drunk I passed out after the second question. Somebody else finished the interview but I don't know whatever happed to that tape!
Then around the same time me and a friend (or should I say a former friend) decided to collaborate on a 'zine together. We started out Xyster with a pressing of about 300 copies on photocopied paper. But by issue 3 we changed the name to Agree to Disagree and went to 8 1/2" x 11" newsprint putting out 1000 copies. Agree to Disagree came out roughly 2 - 3 times a year with the odd year break in between. By issue 10 (our last) we were printing 15,000 copies. Things were getting too hectic for me as I had just got married and doing all the editting and layout for 'zine became too much. And then my "friend" decided to stop doing the 'zine so it's been in hiatus for about 4 years now. Of all the work we did the best acolade was that we were voted the Number 1 "foreign" 'zine in 'Zine Guide ..4. Wow!!
Reviews
Since I haven't been active in putting out a 'zine I occasionally do music reviews. In the past I've had them published in The Nerve, Jersey Beat and Flexyourhead.net (but that aspect of the website is now gone). Click here to visit Flexyourhead.net!
I still listen to as much punk as possible. My main interest is mid-eighties hardcore and d-beat hardcore inspired by bands like Rattus, Terveet Kadet, Totalitar... But I still love it all. Punk rock!
Hey, check out my "top 24". I'm constantly changing them.. Equal time for all!!

My Interests

Punk Rock. Oh... and I also like walks on the beach with my dog Gemini. Not really, I prefer to just walk her around my 'hood. No beaches here in the 'burbs.

When I'm not busy driving my kids around for lessons, I try and make it my buds radio show which I have been co-hosting sporadically for a number years, but with work and family commitments I only make it up there on the occassion. Aaron does the show every Saturday from noon - 1 PM (PST). Check it out live .. at http://www.citr.ca or our website at http://www.streetpunkradio.com

Is it heavy metal or punk? What’s up with that?

Although I've been a co-host on the punk rock radio show Generation Annihilation on and off for a few years now I've also been given the task (I offered, they accepted) to hosting on Powerchord recent...
