About Closer: Closer is the third play written by Patrick Marber. The award winning play, set in contemporary London, explores the minutiae of sex and the geometry of relationships in the entanglement of four people: Dan (Mark Kay), an obituary writer about to launch his first novel, his girlfriend Alice (Jacqueline Jandrell), a mysteriously young erotic stripper, Anna (Kirsty Hinchcliffe), a photographer in her mid-thirties whose favorite subject are strangers, and Larry (Stefan Hajek), a dermatologist, who claims to be a clinical observer of the human carnival. A series of chance encounters act as a catalyst for emotional motion between the four characters and the reaction caused by the shock of sexual passion painfully reveal the underscoring of sex in each life.
It has been described as a work that "gets under its audience’s skin, and ... not for the emotionally squeamish", a work in which "Marber is alert to the cruel inequalities of love, as the characters change partners in what sometimes comes over like a modern reworking of Coward’s Private Lives."
Director Vince Duque sets out to differentiate the El Centro open with music and video installation, weaving a tapestry of character depth, development and emotion. Closer features an international blend of indie music from LA artists Kawehi and Laura Martin (Hotel Café faves), Seattle's Reed, Chicago's Derek Ryan, Remix Villain from Boston, UK artists Simon Mason XXX, Conil, T and Germany's Endorphins. The songs express the intimacy of truth the characters are reluctant to reveal to their partners and themselves. Sasha Freedman's video screen projection augments the minimal approach to the play's overall artistic statement as well as transforms the black box of the theatre.
Closer (1997), premiered at the Royal National Theatre in May 1997, transferring to the West End in March 1998. The play became an international hit and has been produced in more than a hundred cities in over thirty different languages across the world.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT EXPERIENCING CLOSER...
"I was blown away by the performance Saturday night, it totally exceeded my expectations and I thought it was WAY better than the movie. It really resonated with me, I saw parts of myself in some of the scenes, the actors really made it come alive and personal. Vince you're doing a fantastic job directing. Congrats to everyone involved and I highly recommend seeing the play to anyone who hasn't yet."
- Sam Weiner, manager for The New Fidelitys
"Closer is intended to stimulate, to provoke, to spark conversation between friends and lovers about the insecurities that are the undercurrent of all of our relationships. Alice tells Dan as he is leaving her, “I love you. Why isn’t love enough?†Closer doesn’t attempt to answer that question, but like all great theater implores the audience to ask its own questions and seek its own answers."

"If you liked the movie Closer, you'll love this play. If you think Natalie Portman is "disarming," you'll think Jacqueline Jandrell (Alice in the play) is painfully beautiful. Both Jandrell and Mark Kay (Dan) were as good as Portman and Jude Law. They looked and performed great together. Their chemistry was believable- like they truly were in a relationship. Not to be outdone were Stefan Hajek (Larry) and Kirsty Hinchcliffe (Anna). Caught a couple of mishaps (wardrobe and verbal stumbles) but overall, enjoyed their roles tremendously. Hope to see Jacqueline Jandrell and Mark Kay in future roles-- LA theatre, television and major motion pictures. She in particular has what it takes to be someone to reckon with in this industry!"

"I can say that I was transfixed for the entire show. The cast worked together brilliantly, it's as if they were meant to be these four people affecting each other's lives in some of the most dramatic ways. Jakki was riveting." - Jenni Powell
"I thought the play was fantastic. I think you have a really good understanding of just what a character needs at the core to be completely true and honest to that character." - Kira Lobenstein
"The cast could not be more suited for eachother's interactivity and characters. The lighting and sound was well put together, the music between scenes kept you emotionally tuned in. The wardrobe was well put together as well. This is a dynamic and emotionally demanding performance and it was pulled off without a hitch." - Mike Frankson
