I was raised in the small town of Conway, South Carolina. We may be 15 minutes from Myrtle Beach, but anybody down there will tell ya it's a different world our side of the waterway. I'm proud as hell to come from there, and I've finally come to terms with how to write about it, and all the things that make up the fabric of who I am.
I just wanted to address a couple changes in my basic musical focus. A long time ago, when I first decided to start songwriting at the age of 12, I was enamored with the idea of the singer/songwriter, most specifically, those in Nashville. And so I started studying these writers, their craft, and how they came up with some of these wonderful country songs. My informative period had it's height in the early 90's listening and emulating great Nashville writers like Pat Alger, Tony Arata, Hugh Prestwood, Don Schlitz, Gary Burr, and many many more.
Somewhere along the way, as I was exposed to more music, and started to go my own way musically, I kind of lost touch with where it was that I came from...
I explored all genres of music, and had a blast doing it. Still, to me, there is an awesome feeling that I get from writing a kick-ass rock or pop song. But a lot of the writing I've done for the past few years, I've felt I was doing for other people.
A couple months ago, I decided that I was going to try to make a pointed return to my country roots. After all, that's what got me started, that's why I moved my ass to Tennessee, and why I can't shake this place no matter how hard I try.
There is still nothing better than going to the Bluebird or a place like that, and hearing these great writers sing wonderful songs time and time again.
Since I've set my mind to writing these songs, I've experienced what can be described as a personal renaissance. I'm excited to be writing the kind of stuff that got me started on this crazy trip!I hope ya'll like it.
