Vocalist Viviane de Farias was born in Rio de Janeiro and grew up in Brazil and the United States. After studying music and theatre in Rio, Bloomington and Chicago she was invited to join the "Institut fuer Musiktheater" in Karlsruhe, Germany.
She was honoured with stipends from Goethe Institut in Rio de Janeiro, the Musikhochschule and Moninger in Karlsruhe, Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, Musica Riva in Italy and with numerous awards in international music festivals.
Viviane de Farias lent her voice to more than many projects in both Ancient and Contemporary New Music. She interpreted Baroque, Opera and Experimental Music with the same enthusiasm as she did the Musica Popular Brasileira. Her "warm and caressing voice", "sensuality and bewitching refinement", "impeccable vocal technique" and "charming delicacy" are widely praised throughout the international press. Her career as a lyric soprano brought her together with tenor Placido Domingo, conductors Zubin Mehta, Kurt Masur, Henrique Morelenbaum, Rene Jacobs, Isaak Karabtchevsky, italian movie director Franco Zeffirelli, stage designer Burle Marx, guitarist Turibio Santos and other notable names of the international music scene. A spectacular debut at the State Opera in Rio de Janeiro at the age of twenty vaulted her to the forefront of her generation of vocalists in Brazil. Performances with major orchestras and ensembles such as Sinfonica Brasileira, Municipal de Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Bach Akademie, Scola Basiliensis, Bamberger Symphoniker and Tuniberg Perkussion Ensemble were received with great critical acclaim. The world premiere of "Afoxé Sinfonico" with Sinfonica da Bahia and
"Afoxé Filhos de Gandhi" in Salvador, brought to life by swiss conductor Ernst Widmer, was a highlight in her amazing musical journey.
Although in great demand, Viviane de Farias had not, until now, recorded a solo album. With "Moment of passion" released on inandout-records/in-akustik/Germany and produced by longtime companions guitarist Paulo Morello and Kim
Barth (sax and flute), she finally turns to her passion, the popular music of Brazil, making an impressive début, for which brazilian legend Johnny Alf provided the inspiration with his original composition "A hora da paixao". "Moment of passion" appeared among the "Golden Apèro Dozen" in Switzerland and was a "German Record Critics' Award" nominee. This project also earned her the reputation of "Ambassador of Bossa in Germany" (Jazzthetik-D).
Besides being a passionate music educator, Viviane de Farias' activities have also begun to focus on the collaboration with brazilian bass player Mauro Martins. Two outstanding individuals combine to form a most unconventional duo named Balakumbala. A CD release is currently being planned.
