Entusiasmo y Perseverancia

About Me

I was born on July 12, 1904 in Parral, Chile. Pablo Neruda isn't the name I was born with. My mother gave birth to Ricardo Eliezer Neftali Reyes y Basoalto. I adopted this name in memory of a the Czech poet, Jan Neruda. I published my first book in 1923. My poetry reaches many ranges from surrealistic and esoteric to love and humor. Much of my poetry is inspired by things that I have seen and gone through personally. In 1937 after the Spanish Civil War and death of my good friend, Garcia Lorca, I joined the Republican Movement in Spain and France where I wrote Espana en el Corazon. I joined the communist party in the 1945. Because I did not agree with the President of Chile on the his policy of striking miners, I was forced to hide out in my own country. I did that for two years, until finally I decided to get out and travel all over the different European countries. Much of my involvment in politics was influenced by my second wife, Delia del Carril. My last wife, Matilde Urrutia is the reason for the birth of One Hundred Love Sonnets.
