Michael Palmer is best known to audiences as artistic director of the Bellingham Festival of Music, a post he has held since 1993. Live recordings from its annual concerts, featuring some of the world's finest orchestral musicians and major guest artists have been heard across the United States on public radio, including over 40 broadcasts on Performance Today since 1999.
His professional career began in 1967, at age 21, when he was invited by Robert Shaw to become assistant conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and where he was soon promoted to associate conductor.
Over the course of his career, Michael Palmer has held posts and made appearances as guest conductor with many US orchestras (see list below). Beginning in 1991, Palmer led 10 years of successful concert tours to major European halls as music director of the American Sinfonietta. He has also appeared as a guest conductor with orchestras and music festivals in Austria, Poland, Greece and China.
