About Me


Violist Brett Deubner is one of the most accomplished violists of his generation. Inspiring worldwide critical acclaim, the Newark Star-Ledger commented "There is a burning intensity to Deubner's playing, and a refreshing variation in the color of his viola tone." Vienna’s Doblinger Press “Klang Punkte” has joined in these accolades by describing his performances as “Virtuoso and sparkling.”
Mr. Deubner has inspired the dedication of over 16 new concertos for viola, over 20 sonatas and numerous chamber music pieces. He has appeared as soloist with the Knoxville Symphony, the New Jersey Symphony, the North Shore Philharmonic, Bachanalia Chamber Orchestra, the Astoria Symphony, the Kiev Camerata in the Ukraine, Orchestra 2001 at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia, the city of Buenos Aires Symphony and the National Symphony Orchestra of Ecuador.
In 2007, Mr. Deubner recorded the two concertos of Frank Lewin with the New Symphony Orchestra of Sofia conducted by Rossen Milanov for the Albany Label and in 2008 he premiered and recorded the viola concerto of Trent Johnson with the National Chamber Orchestra of Ukraine. This season will premiere and record Andrew Rudin’s concerto with Orchestra 2001 in Philadelphia and next season he will record Los Angeles composer James Guymon’s viola concertoThis season Deubner will perform 9 different viola concertos including performances of Harold in Italy with the New Sussex Symphony, the Telemann and Hindemith concertos with the Bucks County Symphony Orchestra, and the Mozart Symphony in Portland, Trauermusik , Bruch Double Concerto and the Martinu viola concerto with the Fundacion Orquesta Sinfonica Juvenil del Ecuador, the world premiere of Jose Cardenas Duo Concertante for violin, viola and orchestra with violinist Jorge Saade in Loja, Ecuador. This season he will also premiere Samuel Adler’s 5 Scherzi for Viola, Guitar and Chorus with the Eastman Chorale in Rochester and a subsequent performance at Merkin Hall in New York City.
In 2009-2010 Brett Deubner will premiere viola concertos written for him by some of the leading composers of today. Atlanta-based composer, Mark Gresham, Los Angeles composer James Guymon, Argentinian Sergio Parotti, Philadelphia native Amanda Harberg and Polina Medyulyanova from Uzbekistan will be featured next season in performances across the United States, Europe, South America, and Russia.
Brett Deubner serves on the faculty of Temple University's Boyer School of Music in Philadelphia. Since 2005, Brett has served as the Concert Artist in Viola at Kean University in Union, New Jersey where he regularly performs recitals and chamber music concerts with other Concert Artists including Naumburg prize winning violinist Sharon Roffman, solo cellist Julie Albers, Van Cliburn prize winning pianist Gabrielle Martinez, world class clarinetist Alexander Fiterstein, double bassist Tony Scelba and Grammy nominated pianist Allison Franzetti. For the 2008-2009 season, Brett is a visiting professor at the Fundacion Orquesta Sinfonica Juvenil del Ecuador in Quito.
