The Republic Of Strings

About Me

Somewhere beyond or behind all musical borders lies a creative terrain where bluegrass, jazz, classical, pop, and various world musics mingle, played by musicians who care more for inspiration than they do for genre. If that place has a name, it's surely the Republic of Strings, for no one knows its contours better than veterans Darol Anger, Scott Nygaard, and a tightly knit community of young brilliant string players. They have created the visionary musical landscape of the Republic, exemplified by their 2 recordings, Republic Of Strings and Generation Nation, for Compass Records.Drawing from an array of sources that includes Ornette Coleman, Scandinavian string bands, Aretha Franklin and the quartet's own members, Generation Nation documents a unique intergenerational exchange. Compelling musical textures, elegant solos and vocals all emanate from a startlingly diverse group of guests. "There's a lot of respect and love going on among the players," says Anger, "and I think it comes out in the music". One listen proves that he's exactly right. The Republic Of String's music emerges from the deep empathy that has developed among its members over years of concert appearances and informal exchanges. "We've got a bit of telepathy going," says cellist Rushad Eggleston, while Anger notes that "we've been in the trenches for a while now, and like in a jazz group that's been playing together for a long time, you develop an extra-sensory perception of what the other person is going to do. And arising out of that comes a profound feeling of mutual interdependence and respect. And it's the deep nature of string band music to foster this."

Influences: The new Republic Of Strings
The last 5 years have seen a momentous sea change in modern string playing, which promises to change how people see and hear the violin family forever and re-integrate the art of the Bowed String back into all levels of contemporary culture. This is a very special time in string history, a burst of rapid growth that is not confined to one place or school as in the past, but a phenomenon that stretches across all imaginary borders both geographical and cultural.Young string players all over the world, influenced by a small but passionately influential cadre of innovative players*, have picked up the torch of a universal musical ethos. They are playing and sharing music at festivals, music camps, and private homes all across the world. They categorically refuse to accept any stylistic limitations on their music, and succeed brilliantly in mastering many musical styles. Jazz, blues and pop, Celtic, Scandinavian, Latin, traditional fiddle styles from all over the world, and classical music are facets of this Universal Language of music, spoken fluently by these young virtuosos. These voraciously talented young people are living the classic gypsy life of youth, seeking out the pure musical experience with others of like mind, of any age.Their world combines the newest communications technology such as the Internet with the very oldest forms of human interaction, in marathon events where music is passed aurally from player to player, forming a community which would be the envy of any artist from any age. This decade will be seen as a deep flowering of the art of string playing comparable with the development of horn playing in the context of the Jazz explosion in the 20th century, or the explosion of new music which came at the invention of the electric guitar.*Such as: Stephane Grappelli, Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, Stan Brush, David Grisman, Mark O’Connor, Mike Marshall, Chris Thile, Jerry Douglas, Ry Cooder, Vassar Clements, Alasdair Fraser, Darol Anger, etc.
