About Me

..Hey Everybody! My name is Scott Cook, a performing songwriter living near beautiful downtown Franklin, TN, 20 miles southwest of Nashville. I’ve never been much for ’settling down,’ I’ve definitely been blessed (or cursed!) with rambling fever. I’m originally from East Liverpool, OH, a sleepy town on the Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania borders. Why would anyone jump out of a perfectly good airplane? I don’t know, but that’s what I did in the U.S. Army right after graduating from high school. Then I went back home and fronted and played keyboards for Gypsy and then Voyage. And then I was off for California....Where I fronted for a metal band called DBS, all originals, all the lyrics by me. We kicked butt. Then I mellowed for a while in some band, man, we partied so much that I can’t even remember the name. But it’s the closest I’ll ever be to feeling like I was part of the Grateful Dead. Wow, was that ever a good time!Alaska was fantastic, a turning point in my musical psyche. I once opened and closed the 4-day Talkeetna Bluegrass Festival with the majestic Denali (Mt. McKinley) in the foreground some 60 miles away. Just being on that stage playing for all the fans with that view was, well, indescribable. (Get this: Bottled Heineken was the only beverage for sale, and they were only one dollar a pop.)Back to Ohio, where I went back to school and got my bachelors in magazine journalism from Kent State University. And then I was off to Florida where I met my beautiful wife Susan. It wasn’t hard to talk Sue into moving near Nashville. We’ve both been lifelong musicians, and moving here seemed natural. We’ve played a few gigs together as ’Strait Up,’ a loosely based George Strait tribute band. She also teaches and I make my real money as a union carpenter. My music? I gave up trying to get a cut. I’m all about writing and playing the very best songs that I can create. If anyone wants them, that’s fine. If nobody ever does, that’s also fine. But I’ve watched people react when I play, and I’m sure I’ve touched a few hearts and souls. That’s what it’s all about, that’s what I’m all about. Pittsburgh Steelers rule! Come see me sometime!Yours, Scott Cook

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Just little ole me and sometimes Sue. My darling cat Callie could be called a band member, as she is my best critiquer. She runs off and hides in the bedroom if I'm playing something bad.
Influences: Neil Young is the inspiration behind my playing a 12-string guitar and harmonica. (Hey Neil, do I really need a different harp for each key?) My favorite band of all time is Kansas, so Steve Walsh and Kerry Livgren. My greatest regret is not meeting Jerry Garcia, one of my favorite guitarists. On a more realistic, local level I like songwriters David Lee (Letters From Home) and Anthony Smith (Run). But when I’m low on inspiration I like to check out artists like Bekka Bramlett and Matraca Berg; I definitely come away feeling energized. But mostly my influences have been all the people I’ve met over the years and miles. God has definitely blessed me with the good folks whose paths have crossed with mine. I have rubbed shoulders with the very rich and the very poor, and we all have one thing in common - an undying hope.
Sounds Like: the American people are getting thoroughly disgusted with the way the country is being run. And if things don’t improve after the next election I am running a grass-roots campaign to get myself elected President.
