The Darlings: The Cicada SessionsHere is a rare thing: popular music for grown-ups. A bunch of brand new songs that will make you laugh and cry, and sing in your sleep. This is The Cicada Sessions, the debut album of The Darlings.Funnily, the Darlings never set out to make a classic album of grown-up pop, though that is exactly what they have done. When Callie Blood, Jackie Clarke and Wayne Bell first got together it was simply to sing a few songs by their favourite New Zealand songwriters and perhaps put their own countrified spin on them. All three have long and celebrated histories in New Zealand music. Jackie Clarke is renowned for her maverick entertainment style, whether it is treading the boards in musicals, sitting in judgement on NZ Idol, or fronting that large band the NZSO. Callie Blood has spent much of her musical life behind the scenes, singing with the likes of Dave Dobbyn, Barry Saunders and Jenny Morris, as well as featuring prominently on Tex Pistol’s 1987 chart-topper ‘The Game Of Love’, while Wayne Bell has been drummer to the stars, laying down the beat behind everyone from Bic Runga to Greg Johnson. But when the trio convened, with Bell uncharacteristically playing guitar, what emerged was much more than just a casual Kiwi singalong. It was unlike anything any of them had been involved in before. Bell and Blood discovered they had songs of their owninside them, and The Darlings turned out to be the perfect vehicle to deliver these to the world.Initial recordings took place around a kitchen table, Herne Bay’s finest cicadas humming along loudly (hence the album’s title). The arrival of drummer/producer Steve Garden saw things shift to a more professional level, while some of the casual spirit of those early sessions was retained by recording in an historic cottage on the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, most of the band in one room. Augmenting the core trio were further fine musical names: Mareea Patterson (Tim Finn), Brett Adams (The Bads), Alan Brown (Grand Central Band), with Steve Garden himself playing drums. The result is the thirteen songs that make up The Cicada Sessions. If you detect traces of the Beatles, the Dixie Chicks, Elvis Costello, the Warratahs or Dave Dobbyn, it is because these are a few of the fellow artists The Darlings love. But mostly, what you will find is songs that ring true, and voices that know just how they should be sung. The Darlings The Cicada Sessions is out on Ode Records and in stores from late October 2007contactLucy@rhythmethod or 09 630 1177 or Callie Blood [email protected]
