What some nice people have said about us:
Transatlantic Underground: Spring 2008
by Tom Lee
Treble Zine
Ventura's The Spires make romantic indie blessed with excess tranquility. "Ballad of the Spires" brings to mind the La's and Dave Brubeck. It's a love song like Luna's best, with a vinyl-melting chorus admission that "I'll always come back the next day." "I Know Less Than I Did" is perfect for fuzzy relaxation. I like the fact that the hints of Marr, Morrissey and Verlaine can't quite be pinpointed, and the line "like a good haircut you never stick around" deserves kudos. "Grand Canyon Vacation" embraces the lighter sides of Loaded and Love's Forever Changes.
>>>>>>>>>>>The beautifully depressing Spires, A Ventura-based two-piece who play soulful, shimmering pop music, The Spires melancholy has drawn comparisons to British guitar acts such as Belle & Sebastian and Felt. The twosome just released a new EP, Sky Sky, on Beehouse Records. The record provides just the right dose of K Records-influenced twee bedroom pop and jangly, shimmering guitar rock to be a comfort on gray, rainy days and a welcome retreat on those too-sunny summer days. SB INDEPENDENT.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>> My friend George from Complicated Dance Steps described The Spires pretty succinctly in his November post: "I know nothing of this band but they are really making me sad right now and that is a good thing." This boy-girl act from Ventura creates pleasantly melancholy pop music that takes from (but doesn't bite off of) such acts as The Smiths, Robyn Hitchcock, and Lou Reed. It's pretty empathetic stuff, happy if you're happy, sad with you, if you're sad. But in the end? Just really good... That's what people kept stopping by and saying to me when the band was playing our Let's Independent! event at Boardner's last month. They'd walk up during their set, grab me by the arm, and mouth those words, eyebrows scrunched up in seriousness. Then for days afterwards, people kept telling and writing me the exact same thing. Everyone. Exactly The Same Thing. RADIO FREE SILVERLAKE
