About Me

I’m a night person. I often staying up writing songs into the wee hours of the morning, so I began singing quietly so as not to disturb the neighbors during these late-night sessions. I discovered that it lent itself well to a particular type of song, and when I had enough of these for an album, I began to record them with my pal, Zach. Zach, it turned out, was starting a new label called Corporate Nightmare, and offered to put the record out when it was finished. Hot damn. We decided to call it “Skin and Light,” and it’s now widely available in CD format, or as a download (links below.) Some people ask me why I went with the name The White Fires of Venus. I don’t like putting things out under my own name, because it feels weird to me and besides, there’s already another Jeff Sparks who’s an R&B saxophone player from Atlanta and has put out a CD under that name, and who needs that kind of confusion? I've also made a couple of CDs under the name Duplex, but that's more traditional "rock band" type music. So I decided to call the more chill stuff the White Fires of Venus. The name itself came from a poem by Denis Johnson, who wrote Jesus’ Son. Check it out sometime. Thanks for listening. Peace.
