Paul Nebenzahl

About Me

My distant cousin Paul Nebenzahl passed away on February 16, 2008. I was so impressed by his obituary that I have copied it here for all to read, if only for a while:
Paul Nebenzahl NEBENZAHL--Paul at 86 of New York, NY passed away on February 16, 2008 of complications from a cerebral hemorrhage and Alzheimer's. Born on August 9, 1921 to Meyer and Ethel Nebenzahl in Far Rockaway, NY, Paul grew up a devoted son and a loyal older brother to Kenneth Nebenzahl. Paul was the grandson of A. Louis Nebenzahl, founder of the Nebenzahl Department Store. Mr. Nebenzahl began his career in advertising at age 16 working as a mail clerk. Self educated after graduating from Lawrence High School, his career was interrupted by his distinguished service as a paratrooper and a member of the SF during WWII. Just before D-Day Mr. Nebenzahl participated in a covert operation led by the French underground to destroy all avenues of transportation available to the Germans, thus preventing them from reinforcing the western front. He was decorated for heroism by the United States, France, and China. He retired from advertising as the Chairman of Harrison Services after 56 years in the business. He spent his retirement traveling around the world spending time with his beloved family on Twin Lakes and at the Hodge Podge Lodge, campaigning for the Democratic party, taking gorgeous photographs, volunteering as a docent at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and occasionally enjoying a game of golf. He married Nancy Baar Nebenzahl, deceased, in 1947 and together they raised three children: Marcie, James, and Andrew. He is remembered as the most gracious man with a happy and warm smile. He leaves behind a legacy of great values, intellectual curiosity, political activism, commitment to family, and they hunger for adventure. His greatest gift to his family is the love they have for each other. Mr. Nebenzahl is survived by his children: Marcie Aiuvalasit, James Nebenzahl, and Andrew Nebenzahl, their spouses: Tony Aiuvalasit, Maureen Nebenzahl, and Sue Molinda, his seven grandchildren: Sharon, Jason, Alethea, Tony, Amelia, Christopher (Bubs), and Adam, great-grandchildren Aiden, and Liam, Paul's wife, Judith Nebenzahl, his brother, Kenneth Nebenzahl, and sistersin-law, Jocelyn Nebenzahl and Susan Baar Rose. Funeral services will be held at the Frank E. Campbell Funeral Home on Madison Avenue at 81th Street on Tuesday, February 19th at 3:30pm. Shiva to follow at the home of James Nebenzahl at 1175 York Avenue, apartment 6D. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New York Alzheimer's Association.
