About Me

The simplest description of Fahl & Folk’s music is "folk-rock with blues and country roots". The Fahl & Folk sound is both familiar and innovative. The instrumentation is simple and familiar-sounding. The songs hit comfortable grooves and go places where folksingers are seldom heard. Fahl’s songs come from a perspective that uses all the traditions we hear around us and twists them into new combinations, telling stories about lovers, murderers, and the helpless schmoes who just have a hard time dealing with life in this bizarre new millenium. When the band does a cover tune, it’s rarely one from the standards of ‘classic rock’, and it never sounds like the way you’re used to hearing it. The most surprising thing about this band’s music is its danceability.

Band Members: Some of the folk likely to be playing with Fahl at a show in Houston (thereby becoming real "Folk") are: Chaz Nadege on a minimalist two-snare drum kit and vocals. Chaz is one of the finest keyboard players in town, appearing with local blues legends like Sherman Robinson. David Odea plays mandolin and banjo with the group, adding color and exciting solos. Randy Bowen adds to the groove on djembe, bongos, and percussion. Others who may show up to join in include Jodie Gonzales, Opie Hendrix, Carrie Ann Buchanan, Jason Jackson, Carlos Johnson, Bongo Jane Wiley, Kennedy, and several players to be named later. We also appear sometime as Fahl & Dahl, with Rebekah Dahl singing. Rebekah is a member of The Masquerade Theater, a professional musical theater repertory company in Houston. This is her opportunity to perform as herself, doing contemporary pop and folk.
Influences: Harry Belafonte, Chuck Berry, William Blake, The Book of Proverbs (King James Version), James Brown, Johnny Cash, Hopalong Cassidy, Ornette Coleman, Robert Crumb, Miles Davis, Willie Dixon, Bob Dylan, Billy Gibbons, Emmet Grogan, Merle Haggard, Elmore James, Krishnamurti, Lyle Lovett, Rene Magritte, Henry Miller, Michael O'Donoghue, Pops Overstreet, Paganini, Edgar Allen Poe, Prince, The Ramones, Rolling Stones, Rumi, Karl Stockhausen, Merle Travis, U2, Walt Whitman, Hank Williams, Howling Wolf, William Butler Yeats, Neil Young.
Sounds Like: Depending on song, venue & the evening's lineup, could sound like Johnny Cash singing Dylan songs with the Grateful Dead or a bunch of hillbillies playing with their Cuban cousins, or Marty Robbins in a pop band.
