About Me

Jean-Luc Jossa was born in 1982 in Luxembourg. At the age of 10 he started his musical path at the Conservatoire de la Ville de Luxembourg playing classical percussion (Paul Mootz, Netti Glesener). Soon he discovered his love for African and Latin- American music and started to study drum-set, Djembé and Conga. Among his teachers were: Al Ginter, Rainer Kind, Emanuel Baudry, Jerome Goldschmidt, Gast Waltzing, Lamin Sow, Adama Dramé. In 2002, after obtaining his high-school diploma in Luxembourg (Athenée; sectionF), Jean-Luc started studying Latin percussion at the CODARTS conservatory in Rotterdam. His main teachers were: Lukas Van Merwijk, Nils Fischer, Dirk Hauptmann and Martin Verdonk. Jean-Luc finished his studies in June 2007. During a two months stay in 2005 in Havana (Cuba), he studied Cuban folkloric music with master drummers Alberto Villareal (Conjunto Folklorico Nacional de Cuba), Maximino (Rumberos de Cuba), Lali and Ernesto “El Gato” (Clave y Guaguanco). Jean-Luc performed with different luxembourgish Fusion-,Jazz-,Popbands and Djs such as Agharta, Indian Summer, Dj Maxwell George, Miss Bounty, Sight Project… In 2000, he performed at the ISME convention in Edmonton/ Canada with the Mariendall Percussion Group. He performed as well in Germany, France and Belgium. In the Netherlands he performed with Canta Brazil, Magda Mendes Quintet, Bata Sabroso, Jeen Rabs, Kilimanjaro Big-Band, Ntjamrosie, Dj Cuzco, Codarts Big Band feat. Nelson Faria & Cyro Babtista… In October 2006 Jean-Luc Jossa travelled to Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) to perform works of the great composer Carlos Antonio Jobim. In 2006 he founded the Latin-jazz quintet La Razón with Giorgos Morfitis - piano / Jordi Ballarin - saxophone / Javier Bermudez - bass / Frank Vidal - drums. Jean-Luc Jossa has as well experience in accompanying dance classes. In 2006 & 2007 he accompanied Yoruba Dance workshops of "Albertico" with Jerome Goldschmidt, Eric Dürrer, Tomas Jimeno and Olivier "Doudou" Congar. During all these years, Jean-Luc has been giving many workshops for African and Cuban percussion, especially in primary schools. Since five years, Jean-Luc is a regular teacher at the Axent Percussion Summer Camp. In April 2008, Jean-Luc moved to Berlin and is working as a freelance musician.
