Wigbert Martina was born in Curaçao, The Netherlands Antilles in the year 1956. From a very young age he has been inspired by his uncle Romero Leonora now known as the Black sheep Leonora guitar player. Leonora is one of the most famous guitar players and vocalists from Curaçao having held music sessions almost every day in the neighborhood streets with other famous musicians from the Antilles. Leonora was the one to teach him the concept of the clave and the first movements on the bongos and other LP percussion instruments. Wigbert started performing with his uncle’s band at the age of 16. Besides playing in Leonora’s band he performed with many famous bands from the island.
Wigbert moved to the Netherlands in 1976 and enrolled at the Rotterdam Conservatory in 1995 to study LP instruments. After some years of studying he started performing in many salsa bands among which Perla Negra, Bomberos, La Ritmica, La Solucion and many other salsa formations in the Netherlands and other European countries. Besides being part of salsa formations Wigbert has been a part of many European projects as a percussion player. Currently he is a freelance musician and is performing in a funky/fusion project called Elixxir.
Elixxir is a family project which was started as a fusion band playing songs by John Scofield, Jan Akkerman, Allan Holdsworth, Yellow Jackets and others. All the musicians are very skilled players and have been playing all kinds of different music in all kinds of different bands. At the moment we are focusing on composing and playing our own material some of which you can hear on the audio clips. We will also record a CD later this year which will be available on the internet at http://www.14u2.de/. This band will be groovin' for you!
