I was born with a Neurological Tube Defect (N.T.D). The specific type of Neurological Tube Defect I was born with is called: Spina Bifida.There are three types of this specific form of NTD. The levels of this birth defect based on level 1 being the least severe and level 3 being the worst possible case. Level 1 ( Occulta ), level 2 ( Meningocele ) and level 3 ( Myelomeningocele ). And I was born with a level 3 spina bifida NTD.

The rate of spina bifida differs considerably among various populations. It occurs in about 1 of every 700 births among whites in North America. Spina bifida is something that cannot be cured and overtime take away an individual's mobility. So a lot of the health issues associated spina bifida can only be slowed down and not stopped. The progression of deterioration of the human body is inevitably going to occur with patients who have spina bifida.

So over the years I've wondered if it's such a good thing knowing so much about a birth defect that will inevitably take away your ability to do so many of the physical activity truly enjoyed doing on a day-to-day basis.

I know that I have been extremely fortunate over the years to have achieved a lot of the goals that I have set for myself academically, athletically as well as socially. I've also been able to break down the many barriers and stereotypes when it comes to people who are living with spina bifida. I've been able to achieve this simply by speaking out for those who are unable to verbalize their personal thoughts and opinions due to physical limitations as a result of this disability.

Reporters that have interviewed me over the years have always asked me one simple question. Do you consider yourself an activist for people living with spina bifida.? I just simply tell them that I am a individual who feels that even though you have something that is considered by social standards as being a severe disability in some cases. It's still only as disabling as the individuals living with a disability allows it to be.

Throughout my childhood I was really fortunate to have escaped many of the serious issues contributed with having spina bifida. Unfortunately, as I hit puberty many of the issues became very noticeable and my body was not able to adjust to many quote "Normal" physical changes of puberty. This led to many of the surgeries that I have had over the years. The many issues and surgeries I've had over the last 10 years are as followed.

I was pretty lucky to have played a number of physically demanding sports as a young kid growing up such as: youth soccer, baseball, bowling, karate, swimming and water polo just a name a few. So things were relatively normal as far as my ability to walk unassisted throughout this period of time.

As I've got older my body started to make the necessary adjustments to accommodate the onset of puberty, at which time the right side of my hip somehow rolled itself out of joint (technically: dislocation) without me even realizing it. I know that some of you are thinking how is this possible.?

Well your body makes adjustments to the pain tolerance whenever there is some type of trauma inflicted upon the human body. Unfortunately, my pain tolerance is extremely high which isn't necessarily a good thing in some cases. Especially in this particular case with my hip dislocating and then slowly shattering itself into smaller fragments over a period of years.Individuals who suffer dislocated hips and other joints are generally the elderly and/or professional sport athletes from my understanding of it. This type of injury to the average person is extremely painful, but in my case I was completely unaware that I had dislocated my hip at the time. By the time we focused on that specific area of my body the damage was already done beyond the point of repair.

Over the years I have met with a number of doctors and reconstructive specialists to figure out what the best course of action would be as far as my hip reconstructive surgery goes. We have all (doctors and patient) come to the conclusion that if I have it done it would do more harm than good, because of the number of high risk elements involved with reconstructing the hip socket, let alone dealing with the patient who has spina bifida. As far as my hip reconstructive surgery goes. We're still looking into all the possibilities, but at the same time we are looking at the potential drawbacks of having it done as well.

Starting with shortly after birth the doctors close the opening in my lower back contributed with spina bifida.My second surgery was to relieve tremendous pressure on my brain and docturs also to put in a small drain to relieve excessive pressure, as well as to cut away a small portion of my skull at the base of the right side.This surgery cause excessive pressure on my head on top of the massive swelling due to the existing problem they were trying to get under control, which this nearly killed me in the process. Shortly after this surgery was done the drain that was put in stop working, So they had to go in and put another drain that goes from my brain to my abdomen and this surgery was a success.I think the most entertaining thing about this surgery as a young kid, was when people said you have a hole in your head or are you just stupid. I would tell them yes, I definitely do have a hole in my head thank you very much and that usually shut them up pretty quickly with no other response from them at that point.

The surgery that followed after this one was to remove excess of scar tissue that had coiled itself around my spinal cord causing massive compression. So with the scar tissue now released from around my spinal column this unfortunately presented us with another setback at the same time. This procedure allowed my spinal cord to reposition itself instead of going straight up, my spinal column was still compressing itself due in part to the position it was freed from.And with puberty occurring my breathing was another area that was affected due in part to the severe shifting of my spinal column, or scoliosis as its better-known as in the medical world.

Most individuals have the ability to breathe the relatively normally and without much resistance or pressure put upon the lungs. Even individuals who suffer from asthma still have the ability to function normally with both lungs.In my case due to the fact that my spinal column has shifted quite severely, it has affected my ability to breathe with both lungs at full capacity. So given this challenging situation I was still able to play water sports high school. You just learn how to adjustment to these settle changes that your body makes over a period of time. You also teach yourself how to use a variety of breathing techniques to make the most of this minor setback you have been handed in life.

So I guess you can say that I have been through a tremendous amount of crap, but at the same time each of these processes have been definitely a learning experience for me and the many other individuals who have been with me from the very first surgery.The next surgery to follow after this one was to put two rides in that went the full length of my spinal column and to place them on both right and left sides of my spine to immobilize it as well as straighten my spinal cord.Well unfortunately those rods only lasted a period of only a year before going in for routine checkup, only to find out that I had successfully snapped one of the rods in my back. So after carefully analyzing all options and possibilities to replace these rods in my back we finally came to a conclusion that probably putting in new rods would more than likely not be beneficial. So we ended up going with another method of a mobilization and that happen to be taking my ribs out and removing five of my disk in my back. So with the rib removed they ended up grinding down the pieces of my rip putting the fragments in place of the five disk they had removed to immobilize and stabilize my spinal column.After that surgery was done I ended up getting a massive infection over the VP-Shunt site that goes for my brain to my abdomen; which ended up putting me in the hospital for over two weeks. And after I thought it couldn't get any worse it surely did. I ended up getting ITP an autoimmune deficiency that basically attacks your platelets and in the worst-case scenario it starts shutting down some of your major organs.I went through treatment for this autoimmune deficiency for over six months and had a pic-line inserted into my arm to administer antibiotics throughout this period of treatment. A pic-line is the same material they use for inserting medications for the treatment of various illnesses such as cancer.

Important Update: Right now unfortunately I've had some minor health issues and setbacks. I've kept pretty quiet about it as not to cause concern or panic about my physical health.

I have a pretty laid-back approach when it comes to my photojournalism activities, as well as the international media relations aspect part of my life. Though I still definitely take these to occupational fields extremely seriously, I don't do it for money or the possibility of fame. I do this more for historical accuracy and the integrity of the two occupational fields I find extremely fun and absolutely rewarding.

I've finally made all of the necessary and appropriate changes to this part of my life, so now I am able to move forward without a guilty conscience. Eventually over-time the things I wasn't ready and willing to disclose at this particular period of my life, will be explained in great detail by some of my closest and trusted friends who know me best. I have definitely had my fair share of incredible relationships, especially when it has come to my dating relationships. There have always been a great deal of physical and personal challenges that I have had to face, especially when it has come to pursuing a serious dating relationship.

The reason I have to strongly emphasize the importance of getting along with other women would be: Because most of the individuals that I have around me frequently are very strong and independent women. It's extremely important to me that the person I am with can get along with the majority of my friends that I have around me on a daily basis. The reason I added this to my page, was simply to show my support for all women who may be battleing this disease. I personal know many women who have battled and/or continue to battle a variety of different forms of cancers. It is extremely difficult unless you see firsthand the devastation and the long-lasting effects physically and emotionally that cancer takes on a person who is going through it.Even though television tries to cover issues such as this, it is extremely difficult to honestly grasp enormity and devastation that cancer brings to all families and friends of an individual(s) who are battling this terrible disease. I think until see the devastation that this awful disease brings to everyone and especially the person who is battling it. It's unfortunately just a word to so many out there, a word that no one wants to hear or even speak of... until it becomes a reality for them and/or the one's they love.

Here are some strange facts about me that you may not know. I haven't had brithday cake in over 15 years or so, because I just don't like birthday cakes. I'm very strange I know! I think the best calendar in the world has to be hands down, The Pirelli Calendar. I generally go to see comedies and/or hopeless romantic movies during midday, simply because there are very few people in the movie theaters at that time. I become extremely claustrophobic in small groups. I'm only able to eat an extremely small portion of the popcorn you get at the movie theaters, because my tongue tends to go numb after a few minutes of eating that type of popcorn for some reason. Whenever I drink soda of any kind and I don't finish it, I make it a habit to put paper tape to lock in the carbonation. This allows me the opportunity to finish whatever I was drinking that night to simply just finish it without any worries of soda carbonation loss. My close friends as well as some family members find this next strange habit to be extremely unusual and annoying at the same time. I can never completely eat an entire french fry as is, because I always have to leave one of the edges of french fry on my plate... Don't ask me why I do this, because I don't even know why I do it myself. I loved watching "The Carol Burnett Show" as a little kid. The truly genuine and spontaneous interaction between Carol Burnett, Tim Conway, Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence; Can honestly not be matched by any of the television sitcoms of today. I enjoy watching CNN's DayBreak and American Morning, which is basically a daily ritual for me.
