Barbara Jungfer was born and grew up in West Berlin, where she began to play guitar at 11. She played in local jazz-and funk/fusion-bands before she studied jazz guitar at the Hochschule für Musik/Cologne, graduating with a diploma in jazz guitar and music pedagogy. She received grants for international jazz workshops - Banff Center for the Arts/w. Kenny Werner, David Liebman, Kenny Wheeler and John Stowell; Siena Jazz Seminar w. Enrico Rava, Masterclass with John Scofield and made several trips to New York, where she took lessons with Mick Goodrick and Ben Monder.
She released two CDs as a leader, “Vitamin B3†(2001, yvp-music) and “Berlin Spirits†(2005, minor music/in cooperation with Radio Berlin Brandenburg) and has been active as a sideman as well, playing in totally improvised contexts as well as in modern jazz, blues and world music.
Among others, she has worked with John Tchicai, Tina Wrase, Helmut Brandt, (CD „The Final Session“), Christof Griese, Berlin Bigband, Anke Helfrich, Ed Schuller, Aly Keita and Peter O'Mara.
In 2001 she travelled to Dakar/Senegal, where she gave a jazz workshop at the "Ecole Nationale des Arts" and played gigs with musicians from Berlin and Dakar. Barbara has performed at national
and international jazz festivals, e.g. Jazzpodium Ruhr, Jazzfest Kassel, Jazzfest Brandenburg/Havel, Berlin Jazzmeeting, Theatre Festival Avignon/France and in
2005 Invitation by the German Goethe-Institut to play at the international "Festival des Instruments A Cordes", Rabat/Marocco.
In 2004 she won the Berlin Studio Award in an experimental duo with tubist and narrator Pauline Boeykens.
In 2006 she received a grant by the Berliner Senat for a composer’s residence in New York.
2007 she toured New South Wales (Australia) in duo and quartet with guitarist Peter O’Mara.
Barbara has recently moved to Munich and is freelancing and teaching.
