Been a drummer since I was 19 and a metalcrafter since I was 30. Now I work mostly with forging stainless steel sound sculptures and performing and recording in all sorts of places. I've recorded in a cemetary, forest. Wine cellar and industrial buildings as well as more conventional recording studios.Performed in all sorts of venues all over Europe and South Korea.Created a garden of sound sculptures in the Coed Forest in South Wales called Jardin d'illumination.I started out in Barry South Wales, a town noted for it's colourful and full on citizens. When I was around 20, I'd stroll into a bar or hotel and convince the management to let me start up a jazz or rock evening at their establishment. Many adventurous and memorable evenings occured and also the managements stress levels went up. They were not always delighted with the some of the local characters who enjoyed these events.in 1981 I left for Paris and never looked back. I still remember that first evening in february in a pleasant restaurant in the Latin Quarter. The wine the food, the whole ambience was almost magical.I really developed my drumming in Paris. Worked in many different groups, with dancers, theatre performers, jazz.In the mid 80's I ended up in Copenhagen and thats where I got my first record deal with Dossier Records in Berlin. I then toured the then DDR with Dietmar Diesner an incredible sax player. Performed at Berlin atonal festival and all over Scandinavia and ex jugoslavia.I had my own group called It's my Head and I had one of Europes best guitarists Jorgen Cremonese in that, together with Norwegian photographer Per Talleraas with his slide and film projections. The music was wild, industrial, but with moments of beauty. We also performed and recorded with the very original Danish guitarist Rasmus Lunding.Around 1990 I hammered out my first gong and then I was working constantly on my metalcraft as well as my music. In one place I was working our neighbour was a Norwegian blacksmith/swordmaker. He'd wander into the workshop and observe my working methods offering helpful comments like 'Thats just shit! and then stroll out again.Eventually after a long time he came over one evening and said ' Now I will show you something' So I then had a masterclass in forgework which was awesome. I still remember the atmosphere of his forge. Like touching magic for the first time. After this I had a welding lesson and just kept on learning the hard way.In 1992 I created the worlds biggest gong 2.5 meters. 155kilos of 304 stainless and it was 4mm thick. Took me a month to hammer it out. broke 2 sledgehammers and made everyone go deaf. This was made for the Amorphus project that featured Bastiaan Marris, geo Homsey's Large Hot Pipe Organ. Robots from Chico Mcmurtrie, Barry Schwartz's high voltage harp, Barney Haynes and a large Danish crew.I also invented and pioneered Gong and Cymbal sculptures in the 1990's. My first solo exhibition was at Aften Galleriet in aarhus in 95. The only gallery run and curated by a blind man - Gerhard Keimer. He spent a long time checking out my sculptures - by feel!. Having finished all preparations I went out dining with the Danish percussionist Tineke Noordhoek. We arrived back at opening time and could'nt get through the door - it wasnt stuck, just full of people. So that was a great experience.1996 I toured South Korea as percussionist with Tony Brooks in Lim Dong Changs 'World is One Ensemble' After that I worked with the Hydronorts. Big art project at Holmen drydock in Copenhagen.Since then I've exhibited, recorded and performed in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Iceland, Belgium, France, Slovenia, Serbia, Czech Republic, England and Wales.I started Metal Moves around 1997 to only perform on my creations. The 3rd album Nine Lamps is due for release. This album was recorded in Copenhagen, Reykjavik, London - London Vaults, Shunt Lounge - Cardiff in wales and in Pere Laschaise cemetary in Paris - that is one of my most special recordings. There were about 20 deceased in the chamber I recorded in. The track is called Le Mort Ecoute Avec Joie.I'm also working with solo trance percussion on gongs and stainless steel sculptures. The latest recording was on a special set of gongs I created from Paiste sound alloy that Paiste geneously supplied me with. I gave them 2 sculptural gongs and a cymbal Sculpture in return. The recording was part of a performance with the Welsh White Rope group and the venue was next to the London Dungeon in the shuntlounge in the old London Vaults. Fantastic atmosphere, very dark. A perfect setting, performing in one of the arches of this extremely large windowless building.
In September 2007 I was invited to perform on the large hot pipe organ in Birmingham and Amsterdam Robodock. An amazing experience to play one of the largest and loudest instruments on the planet. In December 07 my sculptures were used in a major film soundtrack. More about the film when it gets released.
I've just done a soundtrack for a short fim by Louise Radinger in London. All instruments and sculptures in Metal Moves are forged by me.
