*NEW CD AVAILABLE SOON*---------------------------Chicago 9 are a Southampton (UK) based 4 piece Blues Band whose main influence is the electric blues of the 1950s and 60s Chicago. The bands heroes include Howl in Wolf,Muddy Waters,Otis Rush,Magic Sam,Sonny Boy Williamson, Waters BIG & little and the list goes on. The band took its name from the train that some of these names undoubtedly caught from Memphis to Chicago during their migration north.Whilst admiring these Blues Goliaths, the band understand that four English guys will never sound like them, The aim from day 1 was to play the music they love in a way that was true to the spirit of its originators but with their own contemporary brand. The band have achieved this not by rocking it up but with a stripped back sound of guiter, harmonica, bass and drums and by playing an exciting mix of covers and original compositions. SEE THEM SOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!All the tracks currently on the play list have been written by Chicago 9s Mark Nolan & Ian Mitchell & arranged by the Band.******************************************************* ************************************************************ ************************************************************ ************************************************************ ************************************************************ ***************************NEW CD REVIEW**Traditionally there's not much love lost between Portsmouth and Southampton, rivalry fuelled by football and their roles as the south coasts premier ports for the military and shipping respectively. Through the years the rivalry has veered from violent to friendly teasing and back again. So it's with that background that this Portsmouth born lad reviews Southampton's Chicago 9. Tempting though it would be to rib the band in print, if only in friendly fashion, I have to say that this is a cracking little CD, with a great mix of original tracks and a few interesting covers ('Riding On The L&N', as made famous by Dr Feelgood, throbs with energy here). Vocals are shared between songwriters Mark Nolan and Ian Mitchell, the former on guitar too and the latter chipping in with some great harmonica parts, and rhythm section Melvyn Lockyer (bass) and drummer Elrad Matthews lock the band into a tight groove, perfect for toe tapping appreciation. I was looking forward to making a joke at the end of this review, but the egg is firmly on my face… these guys are too damn good!MATT MERRIT BLUES MATTERS MAGAZINE JULY 2008 ____________________________________________________________ _ AND MAGAZINE JULY 2008A Big Thank You To The Davis Brothers For There Support.
