Carlos Santa Clara

Carlos started his studies on the violin when he was 6. He comes from a classical background becoming interested in other styles in his late teens when playing in the Harare Symphony Orchestra. While still living in Zimbabwe he started playing with the band “The Elastic Band” and got his first taste of Irish and world Music. Upon coming to Portugal he participated in session playing in O’Gilin’s Irish Pub and then progressed onto becoming one of the bar musicians when he started playing with Ivor Lamb and then Billy Corcoran (as a duo that then became MeltingPot with the inclusion of Alix Sarrouy in 2003) in 2001. Trying to define a style for his playing and yearning to learn more he went to Ireland in 2002 and participated in a summer school. Upon returning to Portugal he made an important discovery and beginning of a new passion for Jazz. He became fascinated by the improvising and full warm sounds of Jazz violinists such as Stephane Grappelli. With these new influences he started to create his own style and way of playing Traditional Irish music trying to be innovative yet respecting the idiom and the tradition at the same time. In Januray 2007 the project Cordivarius came into existence with Carlos being joined by João Vitorino on guitar and José Canha on Double Bass . Their repertoire is Jazz manouche mixed with a "Grappelli" like sound. He very recently colaborated with Corsage in their yet to be released album. Carlos has also been accepted as a student at CENTRE DES MUSIQUES DIDIER LOCKWOOD and will commence studies there in October. Carlos iniciou os seus estudos no violino aos 6 anos de idade. Tendo por base a música clássica, interessou-se por outros estilos durante a adolescência quando tocava na Orquestra Sinfónica de Harare. Enquanto ainda vivia no Zimbabwe estreou-se na música Irlandesa com a banda “The Elastic Band”, projecto que lhe proporcionou o primeiro contacto com a música irlandesa e a música do mundo. Uma vez em Portugal iniciou-se na participação em sessions no O’Gilin’s Irish Pub, tendo-se posteriormente tornado musico residente quando começou a tocar com Ivor Lamb, a quem sucedeu Billy Corcoran em 2001 (o duo que em 2003 deu origem aos MeltingPot com a inclusão de Alix Sarrouy). Numa tentativa de definir um estilo para a sua música e com o desejo de aprender mais, Carlos foi para a Irlanda em 2002 e participou numa “Escola de Verão” de música Tradicional. No seu regresso a Portugal fez uma descoberta de extrema importância para o seu percurso musical – o Violino Jazz – pelo qual foi cativado no improviso e som cheio e quente de violinistas como Stephane Grappelli. Com estas novas influências Carlos inicia-se no processo de criação de um estilo próprio de tocar a música irlandesa, procurando a inovação, mas sem nunca esquecer o idioma e tradição musicais. Em Janeiro de 2007 nasceu o projecto Cordivarius no qual se juntaram Carlos, João Vitorino na guitarra e José Canha no Contra-baixo. Eles têm como repertório o Jazz Manouche misturado com uma sonoridade de "Grappelli". Ele recentmente colaborou com os Corsage no seu novo album ainda para ser lançado. No fim de Junho de 2007 Carlos foi aceite como estudante no CENTRE DES MUSIQUES DIDIER LOCKWOOD e vai iniciar seus estudos em Outubro.
