Living in Dreamland, Disneyland, Derekland...

About Me

I sold my soul to the devil for the most heavenly job ever! Yes, I'm actually living in Orange County, which is heaven or hell depending on how you look at it.I work at Chapman University's film school which is about 15 minutes from Disneyland, 20 minutes from Newport Beach, and 45 minutes from Hollywood.As film coordinator, my main job is to work with our students to get their films into festivals around the world as well as win awards and other contests.The more glamorous part of my job has me traveling to Sundance, Cannes, Telluride, Singapore, Buenos Aires, Barcelona, Dubrovnik, or wherever else our films may be screening.The more fulfilling part of my job is helping the truly talented students succeed instead of the imposters who try to break into the biz through pretense or nepotism.Success is so much sweeter when it is earned through hard work and painful learning experiences.

My Interests

I love my job too much. Work is my life! But work consists of watching films; traveling to different festivals; and meeting fascinating artists/filmmakers/musicians. So it's not that bad.

I'd like to meet:

Musicians. They are the poets of today and they really turn me on!

Music:

Kathy Compton, Issa Light, Jane Siberry, Kirsty MacColl, Mark Nevin, Eddi Reader, Josh Rouse, Julia Fordham, Roddy Frame, Alison Moyet, Perry Blake, Anneli Drecker, Gavin Friday, Claudia Brucken, Damien Rice, Erin McKeown, Feist, Seal, Bjork, Bic Runga, Bel Canto, Coldplay, Depeche Mode, Everything but the Girl, Frou Frou, Prefab Sprout, Panda Transport, The Sundays.

Movies:

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory; Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (and other Tim Burton movies); Lord of the Rings (and other Peter Jackson movies); The Cook the thief his wife and her lover (and other Peter Greenaway movies); Palindromes (and other Todd Solondz movies); The Hanging Garden (and other Thom Fitzgerald movies); Exotica (and other Atom Egoyan movies); Double Indemnity; Some Like It Hot (all Billy Wilder movies); Mulholland Drive (and other David Lynch movies); Human Error; The Savages; In Memory of My Father; Angels and Insects; Death Becomes Her; Little Children; Election; Heathers; Persepolis;

Television:

The Simpsons, Nip/Tuck, Absolutely Fabulous, Desperate Housewives, Sex and the City, Arrested Development, 30 Rock, Dream On, Twin Peaks, Carnivale, Moonlighting, 24 (only the first season, then it got too unbelieveably stupid), So You Thing You Can Dance and American Idol (I watch these to observe the fine art of giving criticism and to hone my talent scouting skills). I despise Six Feet Under, the most over-rated show which has managed to pull the wool over so many people's eyes while ripping off and repackaging cliche soap opera storylines that were explored so much better in Knots Landing.

Books:

The complete works of Roald Dahl, The fabulous cultural/political/travel books of Melissa Rossi; the ingenius satire of Tom Sharpe, the brilliant sociological critiques of Malcolm Gladwell; The Phantom Tollbooth (by Justin Norton); Corrections (by Jonathan Franzen); Corelli's Mandolin (by Louis de Bernieres); Memoirs of a Geisha (by Arthur Golden); House of the Spirits (by Isabel Allende); Stones From the River (by Ursula Hegi); The Westing Game (by Ellen Raskin)

Heroes:

Melissa Rossi, Al Gore, Robert Kennedy, John F. Kennedy, Jimmy Carter, George Clooney, Barbara Streisand, Susan Sarandon, Stephen Sondheim, Glenda Jackson, Gregory Peck, Elijah Wood, Thom Fitzgerald, Bill Condon, Bono

Flight 666

Well I survived the flight home today without any supernatural complications. I guess the devil is on my side. Glad to be back in the States after three weeks in Cannes/Wales/Ireland    ...
