With powerful danceable rhythms, energetic melodies and his ethnic bamboo flutes, Ulises has created a unique sound that reflects both the beauty of South American traditions and a vibrant contemporary sound.
Ulises, born in Valparaiso, Chile, is one of the most talented flute players and composers of the Andean music style. At an early age, he emigrated to Spain, where he developed a passion for classical music. He started his musical education at the Madrid Conservatory, where he acquired the basics of classical music.
His desire to explore the different sounds of South American bamboo flutes led him and his brother to form their first traditional Andean band called Amauta Kuna. This was the beginning of a musical career which included traveling throughout Europe and sharing the stage with many well-known Andean folklore bands, such as Quilapayun, Bolivia Manta and Los Jairas.
Ulises later worked for the Paraguayan National Ballet as an ethnic flute player. He recorded on many of their albums and toured several countries, where he further developed his own unique style of playing the quena and the sikus (Inca bamboo flutes) in a variety of songs, ranging from traditional to contemporary.
In the early 1990's, he moved to Los Angeles where he formed the band Alpaka, recording two albums “Kiruba presents Alpaka†and “Doorway of the Andes.â€Alpaka performed in numerous Latin festivals and Spanish TV shows, (KMEX, KWHY, KVEA), as well as on different local radio stations.
In 1996, Ulises left his position as band leader in Alpaka, to join Inca, a non-profit foundation that has been performing all over California, especially in the Los Angeles area, for many years.
Recently, Ulises has released two CDs as a solo artist. “Araucana,â€is an exquisite display of his best compositions, where he explores the sound of ethnic flutes with more modern sounds of synthesizers. The second CD, “Tilopa’s Dream,†is a delightful and exiting approach to Andean “New Age.â€
Among Ulises most remarkable recent works are:
Live performances with Inca at the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles for the Machu-Picchu exhibit, performing at the Hollywood Bowl and John Anson Ford Theater for the summer programs, as well as recording and sessioning for different artist such as Strunz & Farah in “Rio de Colores,†Kurtzounds, Inc, recording a soundtrack for “The Bold & the Beautiful,†and his later CD with Inca, “Que Siga la Farra.â€
Several compositions written and performed by Ulises, are also featured in a documentary produced by Cheech Marin for his “Chicano Collection†art exhibition.
All of these musical experiences, along with his ability to make his own flutes, have made him one of the strongest representatives of Andean music in our time.
