The American Indian Studies Program at Cal State Northridge will celebrate "American Indian Heritage Month" with a two-day "pow wow" dedicated to recognizing the significant contributions of the First Americans.
Festivities will begin Saturday, Nov. 24, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and continue on Sunday, Nov. 25, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the lawn located east of the music building near the corner of Nordhoff Street and Lindley Avenue.
"A pow wow provides an opportunity for American Indians and people from all backgrounds to learn a little more about each other and to have a good time together," said Karren Baird-Olson, American Indian Studies coordinator.
Everyone is welcome to join in the weekend activities which will include various groups of native drum bands, dancers and singers, she said.
"First People have experienced a dramatic renewal in their traditional cultures during the last four decades," said Baird-Olson. "The pow wow is one manifestation of the renaissance in Indian country that is carried into urban communities."
American Indian Studies Program (AIS) aims to provide access to the unique cultures and experiences of sovereign Indian Nations and to educate a critical mass of students with knowledge of the voices, values, and traditions of First Peoples. Through AIS events, student organizations and community partnerships, CSUN provides an invaluable resource to the larger indigenous Southern California community.
While the event is free and open to the public, parking is $5.
