About Me

Intertribal Friendship House (IFH) was Founded by the American Friends Service Committee in 1955 and is one of the Oldest Urban Indian Centers. The Bay Area with an estimated Indian Population of 100,000 has One of the Largest Urban Communities in the United States. As a Multi-Purpose Non-Profit Center it reflects the diverse, intertribal American Indian Community in the Bay Area through programs in Cultural Arts, Elders and Youth Activities, Social Services, Educational Activities, a Gift Shop and Screen Print Business; as well as Facilities for Community-Wide Meetings, Conferences,Social and Cultural Events. Some of the Indian People involved in establishing IFH came into the Bay Area in the 1930's and 1940's Via the Armed forces,or in Programs after Graduation from Boarding Schools. In 1954 with the Initiation of the Federally Sponsored Relocation Program, Many more American Indians Moved into the Residents of the Bay Area came from All Parts of The United States and Were of Many Tribal Affiliations. IFH was Established in Response to Multiple Needs within this Rapidly Growing Indian Community, and as an Organization Seeks To Address both the Immediate and Long-Term Needs of the Indian Community.Over the Years, IFH has Grown from a Small Organization with a Focus on Providing Recreational Faculties into a Multi-Departmental Community Center. It is Governed by an All Indian Community-Based Board of Directors, and has a Predominantly American Indian Staff. IFH receives funds from the United Way,from other sources such as Administration for Native Americans,The California Arts Council,The Rosenberg Foundation,as well as from Individual Donors. Intertribal Friendship House is One of the Social and Cultural Hearts of the Indian Community in The Bay Area and Many of the Activities have a long History within the Indian Community. For Example, Many Historic Meeting have Taken Place at IFH Such as The Planning of The Longest Walk in 1978 with Representatives of A.I.M and UNA in attendance. On May 8th 1979,Lehman L. Brightman President of United Native Americans, Inc. Provided Evidence of The Massive Sterilization of American Indian Woman By The (GOA) General Accounting Offices in a Study Prepared for Senator James Abourezk (D-SD) which was One of The Catalysts for The Long Walk For Survival in 1980.

Because the 2008 event will be a 30 year rewalk of the 1978 walk, many people will be walking with us: elders, families, children, and people from many walks of life. We expect the number of participants to be in the hundreds as we leave San Francisco, and thousands as we arrive in Washington,D.C. We will need help, lots of help!MISSION STATEMENT The Longest Walk II Starting in February , 2008Our mission is to walk across the U.S. continent from Alcatraz in San Francisco, to Washington D.C., to commemorate The Longest Walk of 1978.JOIN US AS WE COMMEMORATE The 30th Anniversary of The Longest Walk (1978)We take up this task to walk in a manner befitting our nations. We shall walk for the Seventh Generation, for peace, for justice, for healing of Mother Earth, for the healing of our people suffering from diabetes, heart conditions, alcoholism, drug addiction, and other diseases. We walk with the message: All Life is Sacred.Through the elements of the seasons, we shall walk; through the rain, snow, over mountains, high winds, through the heat and cold, nothing shall deter us from completing our mission: All Life is Sacred.Let those who doubt us hear our pledge. Let those who believe us join our ranks. As we walk those final miles, by our side will be elders, families, children, and people from many walks of life. We will be joined by every race, the old and the new America. For further information on the walk, please revisit these pages on www.longestwalk.orgThe Longest Walk II benefit concert will take place in Nov. 2007 in San Francisco, CA. LONGEST WALK 2008: 30th Anniversary We take this opportunity to invite you to be part of an historic event, The Longest Walk 2008 . To commemorate the 30th anniversary of The Longest Walk 1978 , another great Walk will take place with a mission to Clean Up Mother Earth on its route. The Longest Walk will begin on February 11, 2008 in San Francisco and end 4,400 miles and 5 months later in Washington D.C. on July 11, 2008. Our message is: ALL LIFE IS SACRED.Out of The Longest Walk 1978 , our sister event The Sacred Run was born. The Sacred Run has yearly environmental walks and runs the world over. Over the last 30 years, over 1,000 Sacred Run participants have run over 25,000 miles around the world spreading the message through countries such as: The United States, Japan, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Sweden, Scotland, Norway, Belgium, Poland, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Russia. These walks and runs have been supported by many activists, entertainers and politicians: Muhammad Ali, Marlon Brando, Willie Nelson, Stevie Wonder, Ken Norton and former California Governor Jerry Brown to name a few .The Longest Walk and The Sacred Run are funded by financial contributions and volunteer support that come from special events, through the sale of merchandise, and benefit concerts.
