I’ve been living here in Hamburg since 1990. I tell you a short story about my past, which is also the foundation and fragment of my life. Well, I was born in a very poor country in South East Asia, Vietnam. I do remember how hard my mom collected all the tiny remnants to sew beautiful dresses for me in a stylish way, compare to that time. I really did appreciate her work and above all wearing those clothes making me feel like a little princess. She was a teacher of domestic economy, my dad taught traditional art and traditional Indochina dance theatre. It was an opportunity for me to try on all the costumes and I felt extraordinarily lucky. My Chinese-French-Vietnamese grandfather was in a high society before he left this world, but we lost everything after the war, also our villa in the city. My childhood was spent in a small village next to the Mekong river with a lot of greens, many coconut palms and exotic flowers like lotus blossoms and hibiscus around our bamboo hut. There were no toys for children after the war, nothing to play with except the nature. I plucked flowers, picked fruits and gathered branches as well as playing with banana leaves, I sewed all of these together with coconut leaves to make “flower tops and leaves skirts, necklace and headdress”, a jungle look. There’s a byword “Necessity is the mother of invention”. I didn’t care, it was a pleasure and I did treasure it. Each evening, before sleeping we presented our new creation to our grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins as well as the neighbours. We had a whole program, mini fashion show, dance theatre, acrobatics and singing. I didn’t have enough paper to draw princesses and dresses, so I drew everywhere I found a place to draw, like on the wall, on my moms textbooks, on banana leaves. I dreamt being a dressmaker in the future, to have a chance to wear and to sew many many new dresses for myself and the others... It was a passion’s seed in my childhood and is still living in me, still inspiring me. Drawing, sewing, dance–theatre, taking photographs, travelling and getting to know other cultures belong to my favourite activities. The resulting experiences and impressions are reflected in my painting, designs and dances. But my longings and emotions are also an important aspect of my creativity and inspiration.
