The Doctor's Bar opened in 1995 and is located at the old grammar school of Platsa, Messinian Mani, which is a mountain village, out of reach from the touristic hordes of the sea villages of the area. I would personally describe it as a very surreal gathering of the most unique local personalities.
The Bar is open throughout the year, although the last two years the Doctor opens it only on Fridays and Saturdays, from November till May (excluding Xmas, Easter, long weekend holidays etc). This is due to the fact that especially in winter and especially in the last few years, many of the young people of the area have moved to cities -mainly Athens-, many of the people that used to visit their village in the area do not perform it frequently anymore -mainly due to financial reasons-, and finally the Doctor's has been married and has gorgeous a two-year-old boy that deserves his full attention.
It is however, in this grim situation that we decided to start having live music in the Bar. Needless to say, that the money the bar makes on live music nights is hardly enough to cover the bar's expenses (if we are lucky with participation). But we do it anyway. Mainly for the people of the area but for ourselves, as well. Thus, in the last couple of years we managed to have a considerable number of live music nights with some established musicians and performers like Giannis Spathas & Vasilis Lekkas, Miltos Pasxalidis , Vaggelis Germanos, YPOGEIA REYMATA but also with some talented artists like Lamia Bedioui & Al Harissa/ Solis Barki , Eirini Daskalaki, Mohamed Alnuma & Rubayat, ANAKATA , Alter Echo, The Swing Shoes , SLEEPIN' PILLOW , Maria Kanavaki , HAPPY DOG PROJECT and finally with some local bands like Voreio Selas, Roland (who actually runs the sound), Nigel and John and a Rembetiko band that first performed in our bar last May (from what they tell me it was a great night, great music -3 hours with no break!- but it also was the first one I missed, as I am in the UK now). Anyway.
So, if you happen to be in the area you should definitely check it out and, as far as the music is concerned, you should not be worried for even if it is not going to be a live music night, I will be caressing your ears with my choices (yes, I am the DJ there, or at least when I'm there).
