Slipmaster J

About Me

The real Slipmaster J aka Justin Cohen. Taken a long break from the industry but now I am back. Some of you old skool playaz will know me as the joint owner of LuckySpin Records, Dee Jay Recordings, the Promised Land events, from managing Adam F between 1996-1997 or even from my time when managing LTJ Bukem's / Good Looking Records' event agency between 1998-1999, largely promoting their Progression Sessions and Logical Progression events worldwide. More recently I have become a partner in Dogsonacid.
The Slipmaster has many credits to his name, although most significantly he can be attributed as playing a big part in laying the groundwork for today's liquid DnB scene through the musical policies of his record labels ever since the early 90's, even before record companies such as Good Looking and Creative Source were formed. Slipmaster J undoubtedly has always had an eye for talent, providing the scene through his record labels with many classic tracks over the years and not always restricted to liquid DnB. DJ Crystl's Meditation/Warp Drive/Let it roll; Adam F's F-Jam; Engineers without Fears' Spiritual Aura or Splash's Babylon to name a few.
Admittedly I have been more focused on the business side of the industry in the past, although I still managed to produce and remix many tracks and played at hundreds of events worldwide. The first event I ever played at was Raindance in Jenkins Lane back in 1991 and with some exceptions including Fantazia in 1992 and Progresion Sessions between 1998-1999, I predominently played at my own events. Those that were fortunate enough to get into the 1st Renegades party in Toronto, count yourselves very lucky indeed; those of you that made the effort to travel by convoy to Baltimore from Washington in order to see LTJ Bukem's and MC Conrad's 1st ever appearance in the USA, what a memory and to all the Promised land massive who went the events at the End Club, keep your ears wide open for news about future events. Also to all the supporters of Dee Jay Recordings and the Promised Land compilations, keep an eye out for new forthcoming releases.

My Interests

Music:

Influences: So many of you for different reasons. Sacha my business partner and brother who gave me the opportunity in the first place to get involved in music just after I left school at 16; the godfather of DnB (Grooverider), the funkmaster himself, Fabio and Mickey Finn who all gave me so much guidance and help, especially in my early years; Adam F because the guy is just an out of this world talent in the studio, Helen T (aka Angel Farringdon) and Pete Parsons, for all the quality time I had with them in the studio, I learnt so much from them; Furney for making music that made me want to come out of retirement; MC Conrad and Tony Fordham because of all the support they have given me but most of all the biggest influence on me has to be...the one and only LTJ Bukem. Where would I be without meeting LTJ; this man transformed my musical tastes and opened my mind up to music that is entrenched deep in my soul. Finally I would also add that DJ Trace had a big influence on my career. As my right hand man at the record shop and labels for many years, he helped nurture the businesses and without his initial introduction, I may never have formed the close relationship with LTJ that resulted.
