Crack The Sky was formed in 1975 in the Pittsburgh suburb of Steubenville, Ohio by founding members John Palumbo and Rick Witkowski. After signing a record deal with Lifesong Records, the band's self-titled first album was named "debut of the year" by Rolling Stone magazine for 1975, calling it "original, humorous and polished"..."a stylish album that thinks while it rocks." Even Circus magazine and The New York Times sang the praises of Crack The Sky, describing John Palumbo's song writing as "curious imagery, full of surreal situations and cynical alienation" and Rick Witkowski's guitar work as "quite impressive." Even though the industry critics expected great things from this unique band, poor marketing situations resulted in sporadic, yet strong, pockets of success. New Orleans, Seattle, Milwaukee and especially Baltimore were strongholds of popularity. On tour, they shared the stage with heavyweights like Rush, Yes, Z.Z. Top and Frank Zappa. Crack the Sky would go on to create four more albums for Lifesong over the next six years with varying members until 1981. Both 1983 and 1984 produced releases on the Sheffield Records label. Between 1986 and 1990, Crack the Sky's ever-fluid line-up recorded three albums on the Grudge label, the most successful of these being "From the Greenhouse". The band released "Cut" and "Live At The Recher Theatre" in 1999. In 2001 Crack The Sky released "Ghost", an offering reminiscent of their unique, early sound that caused a stir within the industry and a wave of renewed excitement among their loyal and avid fan base. Their current CD is "Dog's From Japan", released in 2003 and the group continues to perform energetic shows to packed houses on the east coast to this day.- Dan Stover
