I MET 'EM ALL...SOME I'D LIKE TO FORGET! ************************************************************ *************************** "I'd rather be writing new songs than rehearsing old ones. I like what I've done so far but I like the prospects of tomorrow." *********************************************************** The music business is like any other business, really. Most of the time, it isn't very different from the business of high dollar real estate or the business of selling used cars. Profits and losses, risk and gain, are crunched and munched, all with the hope of turning red to black. But that's most of the time. Sometimes, when you're really lucky, it's not like that at all. Sometimes the stars align and you get a front row seat to watch a cultural shift. But it's even better than that. You get to see it happen & you get to be a part of it. And for that brief moment you have your hands on the reigns that steer an entire culture. Think Clive Davis at CBS in '69. Think Neil Bogart at Casablanca in '73. Think Russell Simmons & Rick Rubin at Def Jam in '84. I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have experienced all of those moments. But still and all, this business of music sucks while the art of music itself is the best. So, here we have the business of music constantly fucking up the art of music. Now, that's a real drag. I try to keep my head out of the music business so I can keep my heart connected as to why I started playing music in the first place. Because it's fun, it's the best, it's joyous and it's truly a blessing and a gift. But it's a constant struggle to stay on the creative side of music, because the business side is always lurking about. I can also hear my best friend in the background stand up and say: "FUCK ART,LET'S DANCE!" *********************************************************** Beginning his career by entering amateur contests and sneaking into clubs, JOEY KELLY has gone on to become one of the most prolific, successful songwriters around. Prior to his musicial career becoming fully defined, JOEY was your "MEET ,GREET & SEAT" Liason at both MUDD CLUB, NEW YORK & MAX'S KANSAS CITY. " It may sound like a sweet gig on the surface but believe me, it's a job that requires precise timing & planing, numerous phone calls, airtight appointments, flawless patience and a relationship with the artist or band that is not easily established or broken", JOEY says. Soon after, I found himself musically and socially involved with New Yorks City's most prestigious and elegant, pathethic and pompus, priviledged and broken, gifted and talented people in Rock and Roll's High Society. I was able to turn all that energy into a positive networking fusion of music, song, ideas and collaborations with friends, both old and new that continue to this day. "One could not prepare for what was to become The Rock and Roll Education of a Lifetime. I had no idea I would be involved with music and art's most talented and accomplished people. That's when everything changed for me." *********************************************************** One of music’s most distinctive voices, JOEY KELLY has won acclaim worldwide for both his insightful solo work and as the Charismatic Lead Vocalist for many bands like MAMMOTH, AVIATION, EAST, BOPSTER, ROCK CITY, KELLY'S HEROES, 40 GUYS, THE RYDIM SQUAD, THE KELLY-MEYERS PROJECT & as of late, both JACK BUTLER & BUDDY LOVE, the recently reunited powerpop quartet that took America by storm in 1980. Through the years, JOEY went on to perform, tour or record with some of the best: Anton Fig, Will Lee, Michael and Randy Brecker, Ray Gomez, Rick Derringer, Steve Holley, Robert Gordon, Kenny Aaronson , Bobby Chouinard , Doug Lubhan, Steve Marriot, Chris & Tina Frantz, Buster Cherry Jones, Vinnie Zummo, Tommy Mandel, David Malachowski, Tommy Byrnes, Graham Maby, Matts Wilander (Virgin Records Sweden), Dino Danelli & Gene Cornish, Elliot Murphy, The Uptown Horns, Phil Grande, Chris Spedding, Otis Blackwell, Blondie Chaplin, Jim Keller, Tony Beard, Jimmy Mack, Earl Slick, Steve Merola, Mike Shrieve, Hilly Michaels, Frankie Eldorado, Steve Augeri, Ritchie Cannata, Robbie Alter, Mark Cunningham, Joe Vasta, Ed Roynesdal, A.J.Pero, Tony Aiello, Lee Crystal, John "Zeek" Criscione, Tony Salinas, Frank Infante, Richard LLoyd, Johnny Rao, Dee Meyers, and many, many more. ********************************************************** As a songwriter, JOEY'S compositions took his music to the top of the charts repeatedly, and has co-written hits for a diverse group of artists. As a Record Producer and Engineer, he’s worked with many of the biggest names in music, his collective works selling over 10 million units worldwide. KELLY'S imprint on Producing, Engineering and Musical Direction have truly been major events. ************************************************* "If I was gonna write again I had to live again. I had to look deep inside myself and start again." So says JOEY KELLY of his decision to return to the music industry after an absence. Indeed at the start of this decade it seemed unlikely that JOEY would ever record again. Despite the fact that he launched his career with 2 international hit singles, one when he was 15 years old, and "SHEILA", despite the fact that between the years 1979 and 1986 he released three albums with combined sales in the hundreds of thousands, JOEY had become tired of the media circus and uncertainty of the road. His original independent label had become absorbed with a major, and his success had attracted some "advisors" who were more than ready to relieve JOEY of his income. "Control over your career is very important. How can you express yourself when other people are trying to do it for you?" So JOEY left the business. He spent the next few years living the life he had previously been denied during his punishing schedule. He took on mindless jobs so his kids could be secure in an insecure world. Relaxing at his lakeside house in the Poconos with his wife and kids by his side, Sailing, Travelling, trout/fly fishing, accumulating antiques, rifling through flea markets, enjoying nature, JOEY would enjoy everything and anything that didn't involve the dreaded music business. During this time JOEY even considered other career options: "I needed to think about a life outside the industry. I've always been interested in Collectibles and Cars, and even Production/Engineering once again, but in the end I started singing and writing songs again because of my love of music - and I didn't want to walk away from it all with the last 30 years as the final legacy!" ************************************************************ ***** JOEY has been trying his hand at Jingle & Voice Over Work for Video Games & Commercials, where he admits it's harder than it seems. JOEY has done commercials for DANNON, TOYOTA, PROCTOR AND GAMBLE, KORBEL, PANASONIC, NASCAR, 7UP, MTV, VH1 & DELL TO NAME A FEW. "In Brooklyn where stories of THE BRILL BUILDING work ethic ran wild, you know, the ones about hard work, long hours and many disappointments, this type of work right here would have to be the closest thing to it!" *********************************************************** THE MUDD CLUB was a TriBeCa nightclub that was opened in October 1978 by publisher Steve Mass, art curator Diego Cortez and singer Anya Philips. The Mudd Club, located at 77 White Street in downtown Manhattan, quickly became a major fixture in the city's underground music and counterculture scene. It was named after Samuel Alexander Mudd, a doctor who treated John Wilkes Booth in the aftermath of Abraham Lincoln's assassination. In order to secure the space for the Mudd Club (a loft owned by artist Ross Bleckner), Steve Mass described the future venue as cabaret. Mass claims to have started the nightclub on a budget of only $15,000.The club featured a bar, gender-neutral bathrooms, and a rotating gallery on the fourth floor. Live performances showcased punk rock, new wave, and experimental music.THE MUDD CLUB acquired a chic, often elitist reputation and was frequented by many of Manhattan's up-and-coming cult celebrities. Individuals associated with the venue included Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Byrne, Arto Lindsay, Lydia Lunch, and Klaus Nomi. The Ramones mentioned it in the song "The Return of Jackie and Judy", Frank Zappa poked fun at it with a song titled after the club that appeared on his albums You Are What You Is, and it is also mentioned by the Talking Heads in their 1979 song "Life During Wartime". Steve Mass has since moved on to open the Mudd club in Berlin in 2001(Grosse Hamburger Strasse 17), to be seen most nights standing quietly at the end of the bar sipping red wine. This Berlin club is considered an intimate venue for touring bands. WIKIPEDIA 2007 *********************************************************** MAX'S KANSAS CITY was a nightclub (upstairs) and restaurant (downstairs) at 213 Park Avenue South, between 17th and 18th Streets, in New York City. Opened by Mickey Ruskin (1933-1983) in December 1965, it was a hangout for artists and sculptors of the New York School, sculptor John Chamberlain, Robert Rauschenberg and Larry Rivers, whose presence attracted hip celebrities and the jet set, and also a favorite spot of Andy Warhol's entourage. The Velvet Underground played their last shows with Lou Reed at Max's in the summer of 1970. It was homebase for the shortlived Glitter rock scene that included David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and, of course, Lou Reed. This was the first place many bands began their careers. Bruce Springsteen played a solo acoustic set there in the summer of 1972. Both Aerosmith and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band played their first New York City gigs there. Bob Marley & The Wailers opened for Springsteen there at the beginning of Marley's career, in 1973. Max's Kansas City's popularity declined after pop art had transformed into punk rock, and the legendary establishment closed in December, 1974. The club reopened in 1975 under new ownership and - under the direction of Peter Crowley - Max's Kansas City became one of the birthplaces of punk rock, featuring bands like Cherry Vanilla, The New York Dolls, Blondie, The Ramones, The Misfits, The Dictators (who were falsely rumored to have been banned from playing there), Wayne County, The Fleshtones, and Patti Smith, as well as out-of-town bands in the same vein such as The Runaways and The Damned. After the breakup of the Sex Pistols, Sid Vicious played many of his solo gigs there.MAX'S KANSAS CITY closed its doors for good in November 1981. The building survives and now houses a deli.In 2001, Yvonne Sewall-Ruskin established the MAX'S KANSAS CITY PROJECT in memory of the late Mickey Ruskin who fathered two of her children. To honor the spirit inherent in Ruskin's philosophy of helping artists in need, the project, a 501(c) non-profit provides emergency funding and resources for individuals in the arts in crisis and empowers teens through the arts.
