What goes around...

About Me

Karma Generator is an offshoot of Damn The One, a hard rock band active in the South Florida club scene from 1994 through 1998. They recorded and released their eponymous debut in 1997. In 1999 they recorded their second and last CD, Unfinished Business. Karma Generator got a re-working of personnel, with Mike McGrinder moving from bass to guitar on about half the new material, as well as contributing backing vocals. Lori added bass playing duties to her previous lead vocal and keyboard role. Roger Prehoda added vocals, lead as well as backup, to his drumming. Larry Smith was added to fill the void left by departed guitarist Steve Salter. Larry also plays bass and keyboards, with occasional outbursts of screams. While Damn The One was more of a gigging outfit, Karma Generator has been primarily a writing and recording group. They call Hollywood, Florida their home base, and are planning the release of "Light and Dark", their full length debut CD for later in 2008.
One of the most appealing aspects of Karma Generator is the fact that their songs don't all sound alike. There are a few reasons for that, the most notable ones being that everyone contributes to writing the material, the diversity of the members’ influences, and the fact that the group has three multi-instrumentalists. As each original song is crafted, the song itself dictates whether it needs keys or two guitars. Some songs are duets by nature of the lyrics. But the one thing that remains consistent is that the SONG itself always comes first. Karma Generator doesn't use song craft for the purpose of flaunting their instrumental chops. Many of their songs don't have any solos. And another constant is that the band deliberately strives to keep the songs just long enough to get across their lyrical intent. As Mike says "I prefer to keep a song short enough that I can stand to listen to it twice in a row. I'd really rather have a song end with me wanting MORE, rather than getting bored before it's over!"
Previous bands/ projects: Lori - Started singing in chorus in school in New Jersey. She formed her first band with her brother, Bill Mayer, called Bad Reputation. Other bands include 911 (Tallahassee), Ground Zero, IROC, Rhythm Factor (Atlanta), Mama Anim (Tallahassee), Damn The One (Ft. Lauderdale), The Lost Dogs (Lake Worth). She has also done duet performances with Andy Wahlberg and Drew Tillman (with whom she got to perform at the legendary Bluebird Cafe in Nashville). She has also appeared on "Catharsis", an independent recording by Lee C. Payton. Lori has also added her vocal talent to commercials, and narrated documentaries.
Larry - Bands include Faith in Medical Technology, Silly Wabbit, Chaoseum X, 60 Cycle Hum, (all Tallahassee) The Lost Dogs (Lake Worth). Also performed with FSU's Multi Media Jam Sessions in 1989-1992.
Mike - Bands include Lord Anger, Alaska, Cro Magnon, Xiren (Buffalo, NY), The Michael Salter Band, Damn The One (Ft. Lauderdale)
Roger - Bands include Tripod Jimmie (Erie, PA), The Generic Beat (Great Lakes Region), Damn The One (Ft. Lauderdale)

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Lori Smith
Vocals, Bass, Keys

Larry Smith
Guitar, Bass, Keys, Vocals

Mike McGrinder
Guitar, Bass, Vocals

Roger Prehoda
Drums, Vocals

Influences: Lori - Chrissy Hynde, Grace Slick, Pat Benetar, and although I hate to admit it, yes, as a young girl I would listen for hours to (ok, don't make fun of me) ...Barbra Streisand. This woman has amazing vocal control and intonation. If you can't afford vocal lessons, I suggest you buy some of her music and lock yourself in your bedroom for hours studying her intonation, breath control, pitch and vocal styling. If you can sing as well as she does, you've got it all going on. As for her selection of sappy songs, well that's another story.

Artist with the greatest stage presence: No contest, Steven Tyler has this mastered. With Tyler, it's all real, the man is oozing with confidence which is what makes him so damn appealing.

Current Artists: Norah Jones, Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clarkson and I have to say the best young female vocalist is Christina Aguilera however, although some of her songs are great, others just aren't.

Larry - Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, The Clash, X, Oingo Boingo, The English Beat. For multi-instrumentalists Brian Eno, Jerry Harrison and Steve Winwood.

Mike - Frank Zappa, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Jimi Hendrix, Blue Oyster Cult, Return to Forever, Alice Cooper, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Deep Purple.

Roger - John Bonham/Led Zeppelin, Joey Kramer/Aerosmith, Neil Peart/Rush Pete Thomas/Elvis Costello & The Attractions, Dave Houghton/Joe Jackson Band, Gene Alexander Hamilton/Pat Benatar, Phillip Rhodes/Gin Blossoms

WHAT SOME OF OUR FRIENDS ARE SAYING ABOUT US:

I came across your music, you are an amazing band. I just love "candyland" thank you for allowing me to have it as the default song!! It just feels right!! Love the guitar in this song, too. Keep in touch and feel free to keep me posted with all your new songs. Good luck now and with all your future endeavors, however I think you already have that "good karma" and much more on your side. Karen Kimberly

instant karma... what goes around comes around...energy of the universe like the star that burned out millions of years ago still travels on but how the powers of habitual skepticism and vanity makes our lives so stimulating. Dig what your doing love the new tune keep the groove happening. ZZ Rage

Your new track sounds fantastic and your page looks fabulous. You all are very talented musicians. Really would like to see you perform live. Your sound is indicative of stellar musical excellence. Magnificent rhythmic drive, and dazzling lyrics! Your sound is lava hot. Absolutely phenomenal! Keep rocking! Best regards! Shifarow

Hope your upcoming release is snapped up by the whole world and you get to spend the rest of your lives throwing television sets out of hotel windows... Greenfield (Isaac)

Candyland is a wonderful song....when it comes straight from the heart, it always shows (and those vocals are wonderful!) keep doin' it.....keep in touch, regards & respects, Rob (Future Music)

I love the way you guys have a sound reminiscent of '80s music, without sounding like you're stuck in the '80s. Good luck getting the new album out (let me know when its done). -Doug. (Doug In Hell)

Totally dig your tunes. . .very reminiscent of The Pretenders but FRESHER! Keep the musical magic going! The Barbra Streisand Fan Tribute Page

Your vocals on candyland sound awesome and tasty guitar playing too! It's cool that you guys are located in Hollywood, it's rare to find good music locally sometimes! ROCK!! :) Mindy (Mindy Hertzon, Indie Siren)

I really like your production quality and song vibes. I imagine you all are especially good live! I'm looking forward to hearing more! Andrew Scott Lane

Hey, thanks for the add and kudos. You've got the somewhat rare one-two punch of cool-ass tunes and an ultra cool name to go with them. -Tom (Superholic)

I really like your sound, very old school but right for the times too. Keep it up!! Mac (McKenzie Creek Band)

Lori, you are so beautiful. Keep on spreading all those positive vibes. The World can use all the positivity we can get right about now! Stay sweet as you are, S. Anastasia

Hi Karma, powerful passion here!! Good Going and all the best to your great band too. Keep reaching people with your excellent music, thanks. Mike MacInnes

Hi Lori! Cool band, I really like the energy of the music! All three songs are rockin! Michael Santiago

I listened to your song (Candyland) you have a very good band, the sound is soo cool and your voice so hot! Diathriba

The new song is edgy, and could perhaps have some commercial appeal. Our consensus is that the best track you have up here is POOKIE GIRL; it rocks, but with great tenderness. In fact, your voice is a very sweet voice, perfect for a track about the innocence of childhood and the experience of motherhood. Prince Taylor, our bongo boy, has two girls of his own, and he says the vocal content resonates with him big time. Keep making those vibrations, and stir in some Florida sunshine. Cheers. The Groove

Hello Karma Generator, Thanks for stopping by!It's always a pleasure to hear from you. Your track "Get Smart" sounds fabulous. Super!!! Extremely dynamic! Your intervallic, and rhythmic relationships are so convincingly flawless. Your constant alteration of moments of tension and relaxation is virtually limitless. This gives homage to your musical genius, distinguishes you from randomazation, and gives your musical talent much significance. You rock!Have a wonderful week. Best regards! Shifarow

hey karma generator...love your sound a most interesting mix of classic "James Bond" meets...concrete blond...and nada surf...very hot...difficult to pick a fav...castle walls for sure ...then candyland comes to mind...whatever the case...you guys are hot...and after its all said and done...suffice it to say that all of you simply nail it. Michael’s Disciples

Hey guys! Thanks for your kind words and support! Very cool songs! Your music is as interesting as the description of your style! Liked that horn effect on Castle Walls! ;) Cheers from the Brazilian friends! Marcos and Stormental

There is an special vibe going on here Karma. Your name is so apropos. Great musical influences on your page! Pookie Girl is awesome (listen to it 3.2 times) Can you hear this has amazing energy. Candyland is very smooth. Sounds like Duran Duran meets Grace Slick. I like the way you bring it down at the end. Very nice. Much respect Greg
