Aubrey Johnson

A recent graduate of the jazz studies program at Western Michigan University, vocalist Aubrey Johnson is currently located in Boston, MA where she is pursuing her master's degree in vocal jazz performance at the New England Conservatory. During her three year tenure in Western Mighigan University’s world-renowned vocal jazz ensemble, Gold Company, Aubrey performed at Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Alice Tully Hall, Miller Auditorium, the 2006 IAJE conference, and shared the stage with Bobby McFerrin, Janis Siegel, Fred Hersch, Darmon Meader, Roger Treece, and Jennifer Shelton Barnes.In 2005 and again in 2006, Aubrey was afforded the unique opportunity to record and perform the original compositions of pianist Ron DiSalvio, which featured drummer Jimmy Cobb. DiSalvio's CD, "Essence of Green," on which Aubrey performs, was recently released by Origin Records.In March of 2007, Aubrey was invited by the jazz faculty at WMU along with three other outstanding jazz students to perform with pianist Fred Hersch at the "Annual Fred Hersch Honors Duo Concert." In May, she completed her first full-length CD, "It Might As Well Be Spring," made possible by grants from the Lee Honor's College at Western Michigan Univeristy. Aubrey recently was awarded "Best Jazz Vocalist" in the 2008 DownBeat magazine 31st Annual Student Music Awards.
