Benje Daneman

Trumpet - Performer/Educator

About Me

New York based trumpeter, Benje Daneman, is quickly becoming an in demand performer and educator throughout the nation. His professional career took flight after attending the Henry Mancini Institute (Los Angeles, CA) in the summer of 2006. Following his time in Los Angeles, Benje had the honor of performing and touring with Doc Severinsen and his Big Band, competing as a finalist at the National Trumpet Competition in Fairfax, VA, performing on a GRAMMY nominated album (“Elevation” on Concord Records with The Henry Mancini Institute Big Band) and attending the world-renowned JAS Aspen Seminar (Christian McBride – Music Director).
After graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education and Jazz Studies from Western Michigan University, Benje quickly became busy playing music professionally in the Midwest in whatever musical situation he could. His ability to play in diverse genres and styles found him playing on a regular basis in many different music situations ranging from big bands to church services to pit orchestras to rock/soul gigs to jazz clubs. On top of playing regularly, teaching became a big part of his life, as well. Benje worked on the Jazz Faculty at Lake Michigan College (Benton Harbor, MI), directed a middle school band program, led clinics at all grade levels, and had a full studio of private students. In late summer of 2008, Benje headed out east to New York City where he is currently working toward his Master's Degree in Jazz Trumpet Performance at Manhattan School of Music.
Throughout the years, Benje has had the honor of studying with many esteemed musicians such as Scott Wendholt, Charley Davis, Scott Thornburg and Fred Hersch. He has performed nationally and internationally with prestigious ensembles such as The Doc Severinsen Big Band, The Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra and Big Band, WMU’s Gold Company (South African Tour), WMU Symphonic Band (China Tour), and International Youth Blue Lake Band (Europe Tour). As an educator, Benje has worked as a clinician, band director and private instructor in many levels of education ranging from elementary to college.
Benje holds degrees in both Music Education and Jazz Studies (Performance) from Western Michigan University. Benje is currently working on his Master’s Degree in Jazz Trumpet at Manhattan School of Music in New York City.

Influences: Everything!! In jazz trumpet though, I'd have to say Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan, Miles, Satchmo, Freddie Hubbard, Tom Harrell, Fats Navarro (along with any of the greats that I missed!!) for everything they've set up for us today. Otherwise, I can get into almost anything from Straight ahead jazz to Classical to Funk/R&B to Classic Rock. You gotta look for the good in anything... because it's there, just look!

As for those who have professional influenced me personally, I'd have to thank Charley Davis, Doc Severinsen, Ernie Watts and Tony Scodwell for giving me the opportunity to push ahead. They have all showed me how to be professional AND good people. That's more than I can ask for out of people who have influenced me.

Also, the support from those who helped me through my developing years like Scott Thornburg, Scott Cowan, Stephen Jones, Dr. Steve Zegree and Tom Knific. I wouldn't know what I know now, or be who I am without them and their gifts of knowledge.

And lastly, my family and friends. You continue to inspire me to do what I'm doing... and be what I am. Thank you!
