About Me

UPDATE Due to logistics and volunteer participation I have decided to launch the site in three stages over 2008.
Stage 1: Social Networking. This will basically be a Facebook or MySpace type section of the site, but geared towards those dealing with autism.
Stage 2: Information. This will be the site I originally spoke of. Unlike stage 1, this stage requires a LOT of volunteer participation. Once stage 1 has been launched, and the traffic is there, the hope is it will motivate the volunteers to produce because they'll know an audience is there. I'm counting on you all to participate in the social networking side of AutisticLiving.com to help make that happen.
Stage 3: The "pro" side. This will also require heavy volunteer input, but will be geared towards those working with autism in a professional capacity, or those who wish to break into the field.
I'm sorry for the delays, but you all know how it is I think :) There will be no "alpha" phase of stage 1, but there will be folks beta testing in February. Barring any major issues we should be looking at a launch of 3/1
Thank You for your interest!
Chris
Hello Everyone,
A short time ago, I embarked on a journey that is the technical equivalent of climbing Mount Everest. A website that will cover ALL things Autism . There will be no specific agenda, and no specific cause. The goal is to provide everything, and I mean absolutely everything. I am even putting together a section to track the political scene, and already have at least one volunteer for that section. I don't want another parent to go through what I did, clicking hundreds of links out of Google search results only to find one vaccine rant, or theory from the planet Mars, after the other. Either that, or a page with ribbons, bows, puzzle pieces, and absolutely no helpful information. Meanwhile their child is behind them laying on the floor, watching something spin, or worse yet, sitting in a corner. There should be no need to waste so much time trying to learn about this disorder, and how to work with it. The time would be much better spent working with the child, instead of hunting for information, day after day.
In addition to being a reference, the site will be a "community". Some of you may know it as "Web 2.0". I am handling most of that myself, and since it's only code, I probably can. However, there are many other features I have in mind which I may need some help with in the future. As for the content, I cannot possibly populate the content for this site myself. I would be writing for years, and do not possess that kind of knowledge anyway.
So, what I am asking for today is your help. I need volunteers with a professional background in Autism. I also need folks that may have a technology, legal, journalism, or art background. If you have lots of time, great. If not, I still need you. A few minutes is better than no minutes.
Some of the areas I need your help in, and content sections will be:
-Advertising/Marketing
-Advocacy
-Audio/Video specialists(for free podcasts and instructional videos)
-Behavioral Therapy
-Biomedical Intervention
-Data Mining Specialists
-Dietary
-Content Editors
-Education
-Events, both tracking and planning
-Financial Aid
-Forum Moderators
-Legal issues, both for parents, AND the site.
-Local/Regional data
-Occupational Therapy
-Politics(related to Autism)
-Products(reviews)
-Safety
-Speech Therapy
-Technical Professionals(to assist with site dev)
...and I'm sure the list will grow as time goes on.
Keep in mind, this site will have a global audience. I am looking for volunteers from all countries, and all languages. The site will have a translation feature which will allow folks to switch to their first language.
If you would like to see a snapshot of the site in development, I posted a glimpse of the upper left corner here...

Keep in mind, the menu items on the left are temporary. There will probably be plenty of changes before launch.
If you would like to volunteer, please email me directly...

If you are interested, but do not wish to volunteer at this time, you can sign up for the site launch mailing list here...
http://www.autisticliving.com
I hope to hear from you soon.
Also, if you know of any others that you would see fit to contribute to a site like this, please feel free to forward along this information. You might even consider printing it out, and giving a copy to your developmental pediatrician on your next visit.
Until AutisticLiving.com is ready to provide the information that is so critical to navigating the autism spectrum, we would like to direct you to an organization that which we hold in high regard. The Autism Research Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to treating, and finding the cause of autism can be found here... http://www.autism.com . We think you'll like what you see.
Thank You,
Chris

My Interests

Providing a comprehensive resource for Autism

I'd like to meet:

All of the AL volunteers

Heroes:

So many.
Some wear police, firefighter, and military uniforms. They're easy to spot.
The ones that I really look up to are the ones that look like you and me. They wear regular clothes, and carry no badges, guns, or hoses. They don't make profound speeches, and they don't write the laws. They don't run into burning buildings, and they don't chase down crooks. They don't fight for their country, and they don't salute a flag.
They're the folks who have the talent, and have chosen to work with those who have autism. You know who they are. They sit on the carpet in your home, going over that puzzle, or that one sign, over, and over again. They come in a few times a week. Sometimes more than one. They come armed with books, puzzles, toys, even just some string sometimes. They might bring some play-doh, or maybe just a small plastic brush. Sometimes a great big yoga ball or even a parachute.
Sometimes, if you're lucky enough, you go to them. They work in big buildings, in big rooms, with gym mats and toys everywhere. No matter how loud the noise, no matter how fruitless the effort may seem, they keep going. While some give up, and some turn away. "He just needs more discipline" some of them might say. No, not these folks, because they know better. They know what needs to be done, they never give up, they never surrender.
They sit there, on the carpet, day after day after day. All day long, they go from house to house, or room to room, sitting on carpets, and sitting on floors. Opening doors and changing lives.
"Candy" they might say while twisting their hand into their cheek. "Juice" with their thumb to their lips. Over and over again. "More", "show me more", as they touch their fingertips together.
They don't do it for the money, and they don't do it for the fame. They don't do it for their country, and not for personal gain.
They do it for the kids.
These people, each and every one of them, are my heroes.
