About Me

AHIMSA – World Music Group
During one of his concert tours in Germany Neyveli S.Radhakrishna , a reputed South Indian Violinist, based in Chennai chanced upon Matthias mueller, a Jazz and pop guitarist who had a stint in Chennai, learning Veena.(an ancient Indian stringed instrument) Fascinated by Carnatic music, Matthias muller had a burning desire to form a music group along with Indian Musicians. Radhakrishna had similar passion for a long time.

The chance meeting blossomed in to friendship and mutual admiration. Thus was born the music group "AHIMSA" with five musicians. (on the auspicious Vijayadasami day 19.10.1999)

There is vast scope for improvisation in both Jazz and Indian music. Presentation of enchanting, daring, and technically proficient improvisational music is the forte of AHIMSA.

* "AHIMSA" in Sanskrit denotes non-violence, compassion, love and reverence for all beings, every form of life.

Neyveli S. Radhakrishna - Doubleviolin
Though he has no family music back ground, by dint of hard work, perseverance, commitment and a strong will to carve a niche for himself in the music world, Radhakrishna has earned laurels as an accompanist to masters of south Indian vocal tradition and as a soloist.
While extensively touring Sri Lanka, South Africa and all over Europe, he has assimilated local genres of music. He plays Indian classical, Asia and world fusion. His captivating style, unusual musical phrasing and penchant for improvisation are a connosieur's delight.
The chance meeting with Matthias Muller opened new vistas in his musical journey. Muller, a Jazz guitarist having studied veena in Chennai, got a peep into the depth, dimension, charm and glory of Carnatic music.

The first AHIMSA album recorded in a studio in Germany live with five musicians is called "Seven steps to liberty - Step one".

Radhakrishna plays a five string violin tuning DADAD with harmonics ringing to the range of viola.

Armin Metz - 6/7-string fretted/frettles Bassist,Composer, Arranger

Armin Metz was born 1974 in Regensburg, Germany. From his early childhood he was attracted by music, listening to 70's radio program and playing to Funk Soul and Pop on selfmade instruments. After autodidactic experiences he achieved lessons in classical piano from the age of nine. Inspired by electronical/film music he was fascinated with synthesizers in the mid 80's. Metz picked up the bass with 15, what followed a passion for earthy grooves and unique techniques. His explorations as a bass player and composer led him through the wide field of worldmusic, especially to classical indian music. Metz moved to Berlin where he studied bass and popular music at the University of Music HfM.

He played bass in various worldmusic/pop projects (since 2005 he's a member of the Talvin Singh Trio) and produced several tracks ranging from D'n'B and electronica (collaborations include Talvin Singh, releases under his pseudonym Gemin) to house and trance (e.g. with Shiva Chandra's mastermind Daniel Vernunft). Studio projects such as Siggi Stern's album "Siam Bruder" feature Metz as producer/multi-instrumentalist. Together with german didgeridoo player Marc Miethe he 1997 formed the didge'n'bass-duo Boobinga, in 1999 he co-founded the worldfusion band Ahimsa (India/Germany) which recorded two albums and toured through Europe several times. Sometimes he can be heard performing solo bass concerts.

Metz has worked as a bass player/producer with Talvin Singh, Anandan Sivamani, Louis Banks, Shiva Chandra, Felix Sabal-Lecco, Tunji Beier, Tim Deluxe, Hossam Shaker, Anuradha Krishnamurthi, Christina Lux and Sonja Kandels amongst others.

Udai Mazumdar - Tabla

On the precincts of percussion and maxims of melody a name, it seems, has come to stay.
A name which is now creating melodic and rhythmic raptures in uncounted musical concerts all over the globe is Udai Mazumdar. His dedication and commitment to the classical music genre and the time-tested Indian drum has made him equally adept as a soloist and as an accompanist.

Udai has participated in many noteworthy Indian and international festivals, besides playing for and with Pandit Ravi Shankar in different occasions, like performing before the Royal Families of England and Sweden, accompanied Pt. Ravi Shankar together with Ustad Zakir Hussain in a concert to mark Pt. Ravi Shankar's 75th birth year. His international sojourns include the International Folk Festival Hungary, several International Drum Festivals, Germany, several World Music Festivals, Rome, the International Festival for the Chernobyl Victims in Minsk and the International Festivals for Contemporary Music in Mongolia, Odessa, Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan.
Based in Basel, Switzerland, Udai is seriously engaged in performance, composing and teaching, and continues to learn from Pandit Ravi Shankar during his regular visits to New Delhi.
