About Me
Manisha Shahane (Muh-nee-shah Shuh-hah-nay) is an independent performing, recording, and teaching artist whose work is rooted in folk, jazz, and Indian traditions. She began writing songs, poems, and music during her childhood in southern Virginia. A soprano, she first began singing at age 6 and grew up performing in the Western tradition, coupled with appearances in the Indian vein, often accompanied by her father on tabla. Since the release of her bilingual album, Peace in Progress, Manisha has received invitations from college & university groups and has performed in numerous cities in the US and abroad, including Tel Aviv and London. In addition to her own engagements, she has had performed and recorded with other bands, a cappella groups, and choruses, including the Chorus pro Musica with which she performed at Carnegie Hall, and the band Dragonfly, with which she appears on Blind-the Remixes, released by Sony India and Sony France. After shoveling more than 40 inches of snow in January of 2005, Manisha wisely relocated from Boston to sunny Los Angeles last fall. Soon after her move to LA, one of her songs was selected for the February 2006 Los Angeles Independent Artists of the Month Compilation CD and she is now performing regularly in the area.
Manisha weaves bilingual tales that "transport you to distant lands" (Lokvani) "with unexpected harmonic twists and a flair for meaningful lyrics" (Northeast Performer). Ever since she was a young girl, she has been fortunate to visit, study, and work in many different places, and she thus brings a wide range of experience to her music, often juxtaposing her small-town roots with global awareness. The preface to her debut album Peace in Progress reads, I used to believe that conflicting internal commentary, misunderstandings in our homes and communities, and wars of all kinds obstructed peace, until I realized that navigating this terrain is part of our collective peace in progress. . .
