~~~~~~~~~~~~“I want to belong to the living/Alive, alive, I want to get up and jive/I want to wreck my stockings in some juke box dive.†Ariella resonates with the lyrics of Joni Mitchell because she finds solace in the world of creativity and music. Her first gigs were held at “club Ariella†(a.k.a. her crib), where she’d lean against the railing and belt out baby tunes into the wee hours of the night. Ariella’s dynamics have since shifted across an unconventional path. Like a glissando, she slides effortlessly between musical worlds. Ariella has gone from a nocturnal singing baby, to a nice Jewish girl studying to be a cantor, to a woman whose musical prowess knows not the bounds of ethnicity, genre or instrument. Growing up in Minnesota, Ariella was blessed with supportive teachers who recognized her talent and fostered her musical growth. In her h.s. choral program, she was pushed to strive for excellence in musicianship and developed a strong work ethic. She went on to earn a degree in Music at the Ohio State University. While in college, she focused on operatic music and founded/directed the Jewish A cappella Group, the MeshugaNotes. During the summer before her senior year, Ariella studied abroad in Ghana. This trip served as a pivotal experience in the development of her musical identity.
“I felt liberated from the classical voice. A new world opened for me.†In Ghana, Ariella discovered a culture where music was threaded into the fabric of everyday life. Her journey sparked her passion for ethnomusicology and served as the impetus for her work in world music fusion and the formation of her current band, Yeh Dede.
Ariella has lived in Los Angeles since the summer of 2003. Somewhere between LA’s drum circles, the ocean and the city’s eclectic ethnic mix, she began to pursue music professionally and make it her life’s work. Her strong classical and academic musical roots, mixed with LA’s strong “singer/songwriter†and quick to learn, quick to jam “studio musician†atmosphere allowed her to blossom into a more intuitive and impromptu musician. This combination of solid musical technique, fluid emotion, and unyielding passion sets Ariella’s work apart from the ear candy of the masses.
Ariella is always working to expand her musical growth, knowledge and influence on spiritual and global levels. She is fascinated by the healing potential of music and its power to transcend material differences through universal energy. In addition, Ariella facilitates "vocal improvisation," "soul singing," and "integrative world music" workshops for adults and children of all ages. If you’re still not sure of what she’s all about, then just listen. Ariella’s music speaks for itself.
